A variant of the first American edition bound in light green blindstamp-decorated cloth, with gilt titling on the spine, yellow endpapers in both volumes, publisher's ads tipped in in the front of volume two (there is the evidence of the ghosting of ads on the front pastedown of volume 1, but no page is present), and publisher's ads present in the rear of both volumes. A frontis portrait of Bronte present in volume 1 and an illustration of Haworth Church and Parsonage present as the frontis of volume 2. A facsimile of a manuscript page present in volume 1. A classic biography of Charlotte Bronte, still well regarded and referred to today, written by a notable figure in nineteenth century women's literature. Bookplate of William G. Barrows of Brunswick, ME present in both volumes (believed member of Maine State Supreme Court 1863-1864). Both volumes in FAIR/GOOD condition. Both with moderate scuffing, soiling, and edgewear. A few small ink stains present on volume 1. Minor foxing to the covers of both volumes. Heavy sunning to the spines on both. Spines pulled with minor loss to the heads of both. A half inch tear to the cloth on the center spine of volume 2. Previous owner's bookplate and signatures present at the front of both volumes. Text is solid in both volumes with moderate foxing to the page edges and minor foxing and darkening to the pages throughout. Overall a solid set, a variant issue of the first American edition in FAIR/GOOD condition. Fair/No Jacket.

Gilt decoration of a flag on the spine.The speeches included here were made to the American public. Kossuth, a Hungarian statesman who also fought with his country against Austria, seems to have inspired interest in the American public at the time. This book chronicles his life from election to the Hungarian Diet to arrest and imprisonment for his views. With his subsequent reappointing to the Diet, the book delves into escalating confrontations between Austria and Hungary and examines the various battles between them. The book itself is in FAIR condition with moderate scuffing and minor soiling to the covers. What appears to be faint dampstaining present on the lower front cover. Some general uneven fading to the covers. Corners bumped and rubbed. Spine pulled and frayed with some loss of fabric at the head. Inner text clean and solid with a front endpage bearing heavy dampstaining around the edges as well as around the edges of the frontispiece. No other dampstaining present. Overall a unique perspective of an often overlooked period of history. In FAIR condition. Fair/No Jacket.
