Author: Seward, William H. Title: Speech of William H. Seward, on the Claims of American Merchants for Indemnities for French Spoliations. Delivered in the Senate of the United States, January 21, 1851
Description: No Place, Buell and Blanchard, Printers. Pamphlet. No place or date. Pamphlet, disbound from a larger volume. Lacking any original wraps that may have been issued.16 pages. Speech calling for reparations to be made to American merchants by France for losses incurred, mostly to American merchant vessels in the Caribbean, during the Quasi War, which was ended by the Convention of 1800. At the time of the speech, Seward was serving as a US Senator, representing the State of New York. Sabin calls for 28 pages, although this work ends with a half page at page 16 and seems complete in itself. As Sabin notes a 32 page 3rd edition to this work that contains added material, it is perhaps possible that this is either a 1st or 2nd edition, with the 28 page issue noted by Sabin also one of those two editions. GOOD condition. Some creasing and chipping along the spine, with moderate browning to the paper. Some foxing to the last page. Lower corners creased and folded over. Sabin 79566. Good .
