Edited and written anonymously primarily by Thomas Fanshawe Middleton, The Country Spectator provided reflections and opinions on literary, religious, political and philosophical topics. This particular issue focuses mostly on the aims and establishment of the magazine, as well as the ideals and background of the author, mentioning other journals of this type and the efforts that were to be undertaken to make this different. Thomas Middleton was educated at Christ's Hospital and Cambridge College in Pembroke, prior to becoming curate at Gainsborough, and eventually a bishop in Calcutta, India. Unsure if wraps are original issue. GOOD condition. Moderate wrinkling and creasing to the wraps, with general fading and minor soiling. Faint pencil notations to the front cover. Heavy chipping and tearing along the extremities, with some loss in the margins. Minor scattered foxing in the interior. Good .
