A collection of comedic plays by African-Roman playwright Terentius, or as more commonly known, Terence. He was originally enslaved and brought to Rome, being freed after impressing his enslaver with his abilities. Much of his work was inspired by, or adapted from, early Greek plays, and was particularly popular for its use of clear and simple language. Armorial bookplate of Sir John William Lubbock present, although no indication as to which one. GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, flaking and tearing to the leather along the spine and hinges, with areas of loss to the lower spine. Moderate uneven darkening and fading to the covers, with minor soiling. Extremities bumped and scuffed. Aforementioned bookplate present. A previous owner has glued fold out pieces of paper to the endpages, all bearing ink lists of names. Minor toning and light scattered foxing throughout. Good .

Also of note is a lengthy article 'Opium and its Victims,' by Alonzo Calkins, discussing the use of opium and its effects on its users, both positive and negative, as well as mentioning the amount of opium then being imported and used in the United States. FAIR/GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy browning to the wraps, with heavy browning along the spine. Light dampstaining present along the hinges, with darker dampstaining along the lower edge. Mostly minor soiling, a bit heavier to the rear cover, with rather heavy soiling along the top edge. Moderate to heavy chipping along the extremities, especially the fore edge, with some loss. A 3 inch tear present along the lower hinge. Scattered minor soiling in the interior. Heavy offsetting to pages 28/29 from paper having been laid in. Fair .

Originally written as a character in a melodrama in the play L'Auberge des Adrets, the character of Macaire was transformed by the actor playing him into an archetypical con man that represented scandals in government, politics and high society in France. Due to the scandalous nature of the character, it was banned from being used in plays in 19th century France, with people charged with crimes for its portrayal (see Wikipedia). VERY GOOD book and slipcase. Minor foxing to the spine of the book. Minor toning. Minor soiling, staining and scuffing to the slipcase and folder. Very Good .
