"In 1850, French's group sailed from New York to New Orleans. From there, it went by land to San Antonio. Many disasters occurred between San Antonio and El Paso. There the group realized that French was a fraud. He escaped to Mexico. The group split into four smaller groups. Miles' group and another went by land to San Diego, and two went through Mexico to get a ship to San Diego. From San Diego, Miles took a ship to San Francisco." Howes M-597. Wagner-Camp: 202 note.
