February 23rd, 1834 deed from Alexander Fleming of the Bellows Falls Canal Company to Stephen Mellish for $1 for land in the village of Bellows Falls, Vermont. The Bellows Canal was one of the oldest canals built in the United States, in order to allow boat traffic to bypass Great Falls, and render the Connecticut River navigable; started in 1791, it took ten years to complete its nine locks and 52 ft. high dam, by which time it was already being used to power a mill.
