Description: Baltimore, [MD], 1869. [2] pp. Bifolium. 5 x 8 inches. March 2nd, 1869. Letter from founder of the Maryland Historical Society, Brantz Mayer, thanking Mrs. Mary C. Sparks of Cambridge, Massachusetts for her "kind recollection" of him, in a memoir. Brantz Mayer (1809-1879) founded the Maryland Historical Society in 1844, and was also an author, lawyer, and member of the American Antiquarian Society. Sparks also served as President of Harvard University (1849 -1853). The memoir to which Mayer refers in his letter is George Ellis'"Memoir of Jared Sparks" (1869), reprinted from the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society for May 1868. Brantz Mayer's own work, "Memoir of Jared Sparks" (1867), was prepared for the Maryland Historical Society. Folded, else near fine.
