Author: Massachusetts] Marston, E. Otis Title: [Als] Three Letters from E. Otis Marston Discussing Business, Family, and Politics with His Brother H.S. Marston, in North Hampton
Description: Boston, 1856. 3 sheets. 8.5 x 10 inches. Three letters from E. [Edwin] Otis Marston (1820-1907) Boston to his younger brother, Henry Smith Marston (1828-1911) back home in North Hampton. 1. November 18th, 1852. There is some mention of the political climate in the earliest letter, when Marston expresses his confidence in the newly elected president, Franklin Pierce, whom he describes as, "emphatically the peoples President and if I don't err in judgment when he gets into the chair matters will be straightened after Old Jackson fashion the fact is the American people have got sick of this imbecile Administration of the present incumbents.." 2. January 9th, 1855. In his second letter, Marston advises his brother on the security of bank notes, telling him, "you will surely see by the papers that banks are failing all around so you must not keep too much paper money on hand and on such banks as you know to be good it has been a hard time for business men for some months past money hard and rascality in abundance but it is growing better a little now.." 3. July 6th, 1856. Like most of the letters' much of the contents pertain to their family and friends in North Hampton, though this one details the vast amount of work to maintain the farm and family property in Marston's absence, with perhaps the need to sell it. Very good, letters creased and worn along edges and folds, one chip to margin not affecting text, contents lightly soiled and ink stained, otherwise clean.
