Description: Brooklyn Heights, [NY], 1859. 1 sheet. 7.5 x 6.25 inches. Holograph report of pioneering meteorologist E. E. Merriam, documenting the "cold term" that struck New York City (12 below zero) and parts of New England in January 1859. Dated and signed January 22nd, 1859. Ebenezer E. Miriam, known as "The Sage of Brooklyn Heights", was a special correspondent and associate editor of the New York City Commercial who "began supplying New York newspapers with predictions in 1856. Many years later, astronomer turned Army Signal Service forecaster Cleveland Abbe concluded that Merriam made his predictions using newspaper weather reports [telegraphic]."
