In this short sketch historian Benson Lossing (1813-1891) describes author, Grant Thorburn (1773-1863), who wrote many works concerning his reminiscences of New York City at the beginning of the 19th century, under the pen-name "Lawrie Todd." "Grant Thorburn was a short, stout built man, somewhat dwarf-built in appearance, with very large feet.. I met him and his third wife, spoken of in this little sketch at the counting rooms of Edwin Walker in November 1853. She was a stout woman with a pleasant and rather comely face. When Mr. Thorburn introduced her to me as 1my bonnie shores" they had been married about three months, and both seemed happy.. Thorburn was introduced to the reading world as hero of John Galt's 'Laurie Todd', published in New York in 1830 [based on Grant's adventures. Grant arrived in New York in 1794, was a successful seedsman, wrote some interesting sketches of his experiences in life, and died in New Haven in Jan. 1863, aged 90 years.
