Description: Bridgewater [MA], C.A. Hack for the proprietors, 1836. First edition. Removed. 15 x 20 inches. Early full page broadside advertisement in "The Plymouth County Republican," Wednesday Morning, December 28, 1836 (Vol. 5, Number 10). The Plymouth County Agricultural Society was incorporated in 1819 and held its first Fair that same year, running them until about 1900 at their fairgrounds in Bridgewater. Categories included Improvements and Manure, Produce, Stock, Ploughing Match, Manufactures, Inventions, (with some for longer term programs). The most expensive prizes of $30 would go to the best farm over 35 acres, the best stone wall of at least 200 rods, and the "person who shall make the greatest quantity of the most valuable compost manure, not less than 500 loads of 40 cubic feet each." A five year prize of $50 would go to the most extensive forest of at least 1000 trees per acre suitable for timber raised from seed and at least five years old in 1845. Turnips would get you $6, Wheat $15; Milch cow $10, Bull calf $3; Woolen stockings $1, Hearth rug $2. We could locate no other copies. A very good copy, light foxing.
