Author: Muñoz, Juan Baut. [Bautista] Title: Historia Del Nuevo-Mundo Escribíala D. Juan Baut. Muñoz. Tomo I. [All Published]
Description: Madrid, Por La Viuda de Ibarra, 1793. First edition. Full contemporary tan calf, red morroco lettering piece and gilt bands on spine, marbled endpapers. xxx, 364 pp. Sm. 4to. Though it "..was undertaken by the especial order of Charles the Third, who demanded of its author a complete history of the Spanish discoveries and conquests in America," (Ticknor: History of Spanish Literature, III, p.305) there was much opposition to the work -only the King's intervention led to this first volume being printed at all- while further volumes, to carry the work beyond 1500, were never published. "A large portion of the volume we have, is devoted to narrations of the character of the Indians, and their treatment by Columbus, which Munoz declares to have been eminently humane, although he early countenanced, and even directed, their reduction to slavery," (Field, Indian Bibliography, p. 286). Lacks both the portrait of Columbus and the rear map. Sabin 51343. Palau 185098. LCP. Afro-Americana 6917. Medina: BHA 5581. Leclerc 1050. Bibliografia Colombina IV: 930. Lacking the portrait of Columbus and the folding map, binding scuffed, free front end-paper torn at top inner margin, first blank torn at bottom edge, but otherwise contents every clean and bright.
