Southern politician and outspoken supporter of slavery, James Henry Hammond gave this speech in the middle of his term as U.S. senator from South Carolina, reporting on the turmoil surrounding the Kansas-Nebraska Act. During an earlier speech made in March of 1858, he popularized the phrase "Cotton is King", and asserts in this speech that: "The Rock of Gibraltar does not stand so firmly on its basis than our slave system." Also issued in a 16 pp edition by Henry Polkinhorn in Washington. Sabin 30101n. LCP. Afro-Americana 4541 (Wash. ed.). About very good, wrappers detached, mail fold, notation on one page along margin.
