Murdock, John N. - Peacemakers and Peacemaking. A Discourse, Delivered in the South Baptist Church, Hartford, Thursday, November 20, 1856. It Being a Day of Public Thanksgiving

Title: Peacemakers and Peacemaking. A Discourse, Delivered in the South Baptist Church, Hartford, Thursday, November 20, 1856. It Being a Day of Public Thanksgiving
Description: Hartford, Lyman Webster, 1856. First edition. Stitched paper wrappers. 24 pp. 8vo. Attacks the federal government and the constitution for foisting slavery on the country. "But when great moral questions are before us.. we are required to be active in the strife, and to resist the currents of selfishness, passion and prejudice, which threaten to sweep away all that is dearest and most sacred. Of this nature precisely is the question involved in the great debate now going on, in every section, and in every hamlet, of this broad land. It is the question whether we shall foster free schools, free labor, a free bible, a free pulpit, free homes, and free communities; or whether we shall suffer a despotism which crushes them all, and casts a blight over the face of nature itself, to spread itself over our national domain, and aggrandize its influence, not only in the Federal government, where it is already dominant, but in those states which have condemned it, and put it away." Not at the AAS nor the Lib. Co. Philadelphia. OCLC locates only 12 copies. Sabin 51439. About very good, wrappers detached and lightly soiled, mail fold, text clean, with indented top margin.
