Author: Johnson, Evan M. [Malbone] Title: The Communion of Saints: " a Discourse Delivered in St. Michael's Church, Brooklyn, N.Y. On Sunday, the 26th of March, A.D. 1848
Description: Brooklyn, Printed by I. Van Anden, 1848. First edition. Stapled paper wrappers. 27 pp. 8vo. Anti-slavery sermon by Evan M. Johnson (1791-1865), Episcopal minister who established St. Michael's in Brooklyn, where he served for the remainder of his life. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit; for the body is not one member, but many.." He excoriates those churches who follow the doctrine of separate but equal, as shown in the appendix to his sermon: "Appendix. The case of St. Philip's Church, N.Y" where the church argues that the mixing of the races leads to unwanted dissension. Not in LCP Afro-Americana. Very good but for a tear along top third of the spine, mail fold, browned edges, faint soiling on wrappers and title.
