Parker, Theodore - The Excellence of Goodness. A Sermon Preached in the Church of the Disciples, in Boston, on Sunday, January 26, 1845

Title: The Excellence of Goodness. A Sermon Preached in the Church of the Disciples, in Boston, on Sunday, January 26, 1845
Description: Boston, Benjamin H. Greene, 1845. First edition. Stitched paper wrappers. 16 pp. 8vo. Theodore Parker, minister, gave this sermon in January of 1845, after having returned from two years of traveling in Europe. This sermon is among the first made in Boston following the backlash of his radical 1841 sermon titled, "A Discourse on the Transient and Permanent in Christianity," which led to The Boston Association of Ministers forbidding its members to engage with Parker. In November, Rev. John Turner Sargent allowed him to preach in his church and was forced to resign. Finally James Freeman Clarke, an independent, allowed him to preach this sermon, which though not terribly controversial, caused fifteen family to leave the church. American Imprints 455071. A good copy, wrappers worn, tears to rear, tear along fore edge to most leaves through margin, foxing.
