William Jay (1789-1858), the son of John Jay, was founder of American Bible Society, a member of the American Antislavery Society, whose constitution he drafted, and president of the Peace Society. Like Wilberforce, he opposed the plan to colonize the former slaves in Africa, declaring that those who favored the plan were not moved by 'the precepts of gospel,' but by 'prejudice against an unhappy portion of the human family', (DAB, X, p. 11-12.) Clay's Compromise did not pass. It took Stephen Douglas and Daniel Webster to finally get a compromise bill through. Not in LCP. Afro-Americana, Dumond, Blockson. Sabin 35867n. A good copy, front wrapper chipped, dampstain on wrapper and lower margins throughout.
