Title: Resolves of the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Passed at Their Session Which Commenced on Wednesday, the Twelfth of January, and Ended on the Twenty Fifth of February, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty
Description: Boston, Printed by Russell & Gardner, 1820. First edition. Original blue gray wrappers, stitched. [89-205] pp. + index [8 pp]. Sm. 4to. By 1820 Maine was ready to separate from Massachusetts (as noted in Governor Brooks' speech) and admitted into the Union. The issue, however, was coupled with the admission of Missouri to the Union; the result became known as the Missouri compromise which allowed slavery in Missouri. "The extension of so great a moral and political evil as slavery.. and to make such a prohibition a condition of the admission of any new state into the Union" wrote Saltonstall's Massachusetts' committee in Resolve CXXI which also provided a succinct list the issues. The final resolution would of course await the outcome of the Civil War. Includes a 12 page section listing the ownership and status all lands in Maine. Shoemaker 2166. Lacking the spine and rear wrapper, foxing to margins, contents very good.
