Hunter was born in Virginia in 1809, admitted to the bar in 1830 and elected as an independent to the Virginia State Assembly from 1834-1837, later a member of Congress and then Speaker, and in 1847 elected to the Senate. At the time of writing this work he was treasurer of Virginia (1874-80). Hunter provides a detailed history of the University and its reliance on the theories of Thomas Jefferson. Wrappers soiled, split at the spine, a few pencil edits (by Hunter?), still about very good.
