A collection of evocative watercolor drawings by Mitsuomi Furudate of this medieval castle town, the birthplace of the Meiji Restoration, still filled with preserved 17th c. wooden samurai buildings, and the center for pastel-glazed ceramics, Hagi-yaki. Inscribed by Yoshijuro Kikuya, the then mayor, to Robert Shaplen, the long-time correspondent for the New Yorker magazine. Text in Japanese. A fine copy in an edgeworn dust jacket.
