Title: Speech of the Hon. Daniel Webster, Delivered to the House of Representatives of the United States, on the 14th January, 1814, on a Bill Making Further Provisions for Filling the Ranks of the Regular Army, Encouraging Enlistments, and Authorising the Enlistments for Longer Periods of Men Whose Terms of Service Are About to Expire
Description: Alexandria, Printed by Snowden & Simms, 1814. First edition. Printed self wrappers. 13 pp. 8vo. One of four different printings the same year. The first important speech by Webster in the House of Representatives (to which he was elected the prior year). He used his objection to the bill, which offered high bounties to encourage enlistments, to attack the government for its handling of the war of 1812 (which he called a failure), its employing an embargo rather than prosecuting the war at sea, and the administration's calling the opposition to its policies a divisive act -which makes it most apt today. Shaw & Shoemaker 33618. Sabin 102259. Not in MU Daniel Webster Speeches Collection. Small tear at stitching, else a very good+ copy, removed, mail fold, leaves clean, and without any foxing. A nice copy.
