Perhaps best remembered for the important role he played in organizing the first Armory Show in New York City in 1913, the American artist Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) studied under Heinrich von Zugel, a member of the Barbizon School. He held his first exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in NYC in 1905, establishing himself as a serious artist as well as a cartoonist. Kuhn joined the faculty of the New York School of Art when it moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey in 1908, but left at the end of the school year, returning to New York where he married Vera Spier in 1909. He had his first solo exhibition in New York that same year. He took part in founding the Association of American Painters and Sculptors which, in 1913, was responsible for the first Armory Show which displayed both European and American modernist art. Kuhn collected German illustrated books of the early 20th century, especially those of the humorist, poet & artist Wilhelm Busch. Good .
