Description: Nashua, N.H.: J. Buffum, 1848. 1848. - Octodecimo (18mo), 4-1/2 inches high by 3 inches wide. Brown cloth, titled and decorated in gilt on the spine with a vignette in gilt within decorations in blind on the front cover. All edges are gilt. The covers are lightly rubbed and soiled with wear to the corners and head & tail of the spine. There are tiny slits to the joints. [iv] & 128 pages, illustrated with a chromolithographic frontispiece and title page by William Sharp. There is occasional foxing throughout with dampstaining to the bottom edge of the first few pages and to the top edge of the last few pages. An early owner's gift inscription is penned on the front endpaper. Good.

The British born painter William Sharp (1803-1875) is credited with introducing chromolithography to America in 1840. Sharp emigrated to America in 1840 after having worked for the lithographer Charles Hullmandel in London. Settling in Boston, he set up in partnership with another former Hullmandel employee, Francis Michelin. Good .
