Description: Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Monsieur, 1785. 1785. - Octavo, bound in early marbled calf with triple gilt rules on the covers with gilt-lettered leather labels mounted within raised bands and gilt decorations on the spines. All edges are gilt with gilt inner dentelles further enhancing the bindings. The covers are rubbed and scuffed with some slight wear to the corners. vi, 380 & [ii] pages; and [i], 380 & [i] pages. The first volume is superbly illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of the author by Danloux, engraved by Gaucher, a full-page engraved plate by Moreau, fine engraved head- and tail-piece vignettes by Maurillier and also head- and tail-piece vignettes by Eisen, engraved by Gaucher and by Ellvin. The second volume is superbly illustrated with a full-page frontispiece plus a head-piece and tail-piece vignette by Cochin engraved by LeVeau. The set is possibly lacking an extra engraved title page. The paper is splitting at the hinges, though the bindings are still tight. There is some minor occasional soiling and some minor occasional foxing. A very good attractive set.

Though Cohen-DeRicci (page 928) indicates a 3 volume edition, the copy of this 1785 edition at the University of Georgia Libraries has only 2 volumes as did the McLaughlin copy which sold in 1980 at Sotheby's Monaco auction.
