Ca. 53 x 44,5 cmThe woodcut depicts the explosion of the Dutch warschip Alphen off Curaçao, signed Coldewijn. The printed text is dealing with Van Speyk. In Antwerp on the river Schelde, on February 5, 1831, Van Speyk' ship was boarded by revolution minded Belgians, who attempted to seize control. He fired his pistol into a barrel of gunpower setting off an enormous explosion, destroying the ship and killing dozens of people, himself included.
