In Antwerp on the river Schelde, on February 5, 1831, Van Speyk' ship was boarded by revolution minded Belgians, who attempted to seize control. He fired his pistol into a barrel of gunpower setting off an enormous explosion, destroying the ship and killing dozens of people, himself included.
