Various - The Ramayana and The Mahabharata: Condensed Into English Verse by Romesh C. Dutt

Title: The Ramayana and The Mahabharata: Condensed Into English Verse by Romesh C. Dutt
Description: J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd. London, 1969. Reprint, Softcover. Good Condition. Everyman's Library Number 1403. These great epic poems reflect the history, religion and philosophy of India. Composed about 1000 B. C. The Ramayana is an account of the war between the Aryan invaders and the rulers of Ceylon. The story focuses on Rama, his wife Sita, and their misadventures culminating in the kidnapping of Sita by the King of Ceylon and her rescue by Rama with the aid of Hanuman, the general of the Monkey King. The religious aspect of the poem seems to have been an afterthought. The eighteen books of The Mahabharata, here condensed to a manageable length, contain the whole fabric of Vedic myth. They cover the period of the Great Migration when the Indo-Germanic tribes were advancing southwards into India, driving out or enslaving the aborigines. Although censored by Brahman priests, it is possible to derive a clear impression of the campaigns which led to the conquest of India; the Kings, Princes and Generals of the opposing armies have long since been transmuted into gods or demons.
