An Island Race: A Ballad for the TT
Booklet privately published, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1972. First Edition, Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. “I dedicate this piece of doggerel - written in bed after an accident - in gratitude to the Staff of Noble's (Lo.M.) Hospital, who with patience and yet without the least dereliction of duty, made it possible for me to scribble these words - even if sometimes in disagreement with opinions expressed. encouraged by Evan Shipman, who once told Hemingway: ‘What we want is a lot more unambitious writers and unpublished poems,’ without - as is obvious - any professional skill, I embarked on this particular therapy. The poem is, of course, entirely fictitious, especially letters from the Queen and any official views, pretended or implied. All persons described are completely imaginary, but most controversial opinions expressed are firmly held by myself and many others. Yet 1 must, at the same time, emphatically state that this should not be interpreted in any way as an encouragement to drive on open roads with that arrogance or carelessness which, far from showing those at the wheel as valiant gentlemen, rather stamps them as callous louts.” . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 16 pages. Item Type: Booklet. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Ayton, Margaret
The Voice Within: A Collection Of Inspirational Poetry And Thoughts (SIGNED COPY)
Pilgrim Books, Norwich, Norfolk, 1987. First Edition, Blue Cloth, Illustrated by: Photo's. Fine/Fine. 9780946259212 Signed by Author. gilt titles spine; cover photo. of Fingal's Cave,; illustrated throughout by the author's b/w. photo's. (mostly of nature); Margaret Ayton comments: 'Inspirational poetry is the voice within, which is moulded and changed by outside influences according to one's understanding. This kind of poetry is a record, a response to a situation. It contains my observations of myself in a situation - how I feel and react - but also it is a response to what I see around me.' The resulting volume is a combination of particularly moving prose and poetry enhanced by photographic images. Its underlying theme is that of love, in many of its guises, and could be said to echo the words of Kahlil Gibran. In her own very personal way, the author expands some of his eloquent interpretations; indeed, she has followed the injunction in The Prophet: 'When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep.' This chronicle of her inner journey confirms the age-old concept that suffering can be a means to spiritual growth, a means to becoming part of the Whole. It is a deeply felt work by a caring writer, and will undoubtedly invoke a profound response in many who long to help and to understand in a troubled world. signed on the title page with the message - 'Best Wishes'; photo. & brief biography of author on rear D/J. flap; a mint copy with no faults, incld. index - 157 pages. Burn, Robert
The Complete Poems and Songs of Robert Burns
Geddes & Grosset, Glasgow, Scotland, 2010. Reprint, Hardcover (Printed Laminated Boards). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. 9781855349827 Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. As well as making original compositions, Burns also collected folk songs from across Scotland, often revising or adapting them. His poem (and song) "Auld Lang Syne" is often sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year), and "Scots Wha Hae" served for a long time as an unofficial national anthem of the country. Other poems and songs of Burns that remain well known across the world today include "A Red, Red Rose", "A Man's a Man for A' That", "To a Louse", "To a Mouse", "The Battle of Sherramuir", "Tam o' Shanter" and "Ae Fond Kiss". Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 480 pages. Dust Jacket un-clipped. White titles spine. Includes glossary & indexes of titles & of first lines. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Colum, Padraic (Editor), The Poems of Jonathan Swift
Colum, Padraic (Editor)
The Poems of Jonathan Swift
Collier Books, New York, New York, U.S.A. 1962. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. black titles spine; "one of the most widely read prose writers in English, Swift has been generally kept out of the canon of English poetry. Yet the quality of his verse is so great that a genuine need exists for a fresh, new, truly representative edition that displays both the range and the extraordinary forcefulness of his poems. Padraic Colum, the distinguished Irish poet and critic, has for the first time collected Swift's best poetry in a new edition that demonstrates its importance for the modern reader. Rescuing Swift, as a poet, from the Romantic critics of the 19th century; the present selection demonstrates his energetic mind, his sense of drama, his detachment, his indignation, his moral passion and his tenderness. The result is a literary event of major importance."; a tight copy with minor fading to spine area; 126 pages. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. DeÂ’ Medici, Lorenzo, Poesie
DeÂ’ Medici, Lorenzo
Poesie
Barbera Branchi E Comp, Florence, Italy, 1859. First Thus, Hardcover (Half Leather). Near Fine/N/A. Lorenzo deÂ’Medici (1449-92) was the ruler of Florence and the principal statesman of his time. A contemporary of Columbus, Lorenzo is hardly known in the English-speaking world as a major Quattrocento writer, author of a large and varied body of poetry as well as an important literary treatise. His poetry and patronage were instrumental in renewing the vernacular literature of his age after a period of stagnation. That LorenzoÂ’s literary writings were for the most part never translated is a fascinating curiosity of history, attributable to the irreverent, bawdy subject matter of many of his poems, objections to his authoritarian politics, and the unconventional features of his poetic realism. Yet Lorenzo is now seen as the most interesting exponent of the cultural renaissance that he encouraged. His longer poems in particular reveal the central concerns, everyday activities, and favorite ideas of his day. No other Florentine writer succeeds in capturing as he does the beauty, seasonal changes, and rhythms of life of the Tuscan countryside. His poetic realism is that which sets him apart from his age, yet makes him such a vivid portrayer of it. Gilt titles on red leather label with extensive gilt decorations on vellum spine (half-leather with marbled boards); green ribbon bookmark; marbled end-papers; tissue-guarded b/w. woodcut frontis. Illustration of author; Italian text; a clean copy; 464 pages. Size: 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. Text is in Italian. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Poetry; Italian Poetry; Italian Language; Poetry. First American Edition; Originally published in Toronto, Canada by the Vietnam War-refugee House of Anansi (this edition of 5,000 copies was sent to the USA but seized & confiscated by customs & never recovered, possibly engendered by the entry piece in "Airplane Dreams," "The History of the Jewish Socialist Party in America" or the usual explicit homosexuality to be found in Ginsberg's most personal works.). Ginsberg, Allen, Wichita Vortex Sutra
Ginsberg, Allen
Wichita Vortex Sutra
Coyote (distributed by City Lights Books), San Francisco, USA, 1966. First Edition, Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Good Condition. First Edition; (500 copies); First Printing; covers printed in red & blue with 'coyote' paw-print to rear. The poem originated as a voice recording that Ginsberg made with a tape recorder while traveling across the Midwest. He composed it spontaneously, dictating the words into the recorder as they came to him. In transcribing the poem, Ginsberg arranged the lines by the natural pauses and dictation in his recordings, according to the "organic space-timing" that they provided. Throughout the poem, Ginsberg contrasts images of the Midwest (and, in particular, the Kansan landscape) with snippets of news reports about the war, and links the violence there with the political conservatism of the Heartland, decrying Carrie Nation's work in Wichita, Kansas as beginning "a vortex of hatred that defoliated the Mekong Delta. The poem also uses images focusing on the sensuality and intimacy of the human body to humanize the violence of the war. The title reflects Ginsberg's interest in Eastern religions.
