The author is not given but the first story "Lady Charmeigh's Diamonds" was published in both the New York Times and in London Society in January 1879. Another story "How Quedglington Was Sent Down" was published in London Society in 1882 with an author name of J Stanley. The publisher of this book, F V White, published amongst its small output an early novel of the later prolific author James Stanley Little (1856-1940) "My Royal Father" in 1882. It seems likely that this collection of twenty short stories may be the work of the same author. This work is not shown in the British Library Catalogue nor indexed at Library Hub. Darkened and lightly marked red covers with dulled gilt lettering on the spine and black decoration on the front, wear on corners and spine-ends and small holes in cloth over joints. Paper over internal hinges is split to webbing but covers and text block are holding together, binding of text-block is sound. Name and date of Oct 12th 1886 on front end-paper also blind stamp for 'W H Smith & Son Library, 186 Strand'. Uncut (untrimmed) pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean No dust-jacket.
