Adams, Amos (Compiler)
Journal of the Proceedings of the Twelfth Annual Session of the California State Grange, Held at Grangers' Hall, Sacramento, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, 1884
San Francisco, California, Carlos White Printing Co. Steam Printers, 1884. First Edition. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [1], 4-71; off-white wraps, printed and ruled with an elaborate border; chips to tips of spine; faint spotting and foxing to wraps (not affecting readability); in good condition. A scarce work from an illusive San Francisco publisher, it documented the proceedings of the California branch of the Grange - officially named The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The social organization, being the oldest American agricultural advocacy group with a national scope, was founded after the Civil War - in 1867. It would claim credit for the ideas of rural free mail delivery, the Farm Credit System, etc. What was most unusual of the organization at the time was that women and teenagers, "old enough to draw a plow," were encouraged to participate in it. Furthermore, it was mandatory that four of the organization's elected positions could be held only by women. Many local granges were established, including the California State Grange, which was founded in 1873 in Napa. Good .

Blanchard, T.
Yee Olde Mustang Poker Club - Original Ink-and-Watercolor Folk Art
S. l. (Monterey, CA), By the artist. Original drawing, n. d. (mid-20th-century); 9 1/2 x 13 1/4; ink and watercolor on glossy, beige card stock; manuscript signatures of the people pictured bellow image; thin strips of residue on verso from previously being framed; in very good condition. A delightful and quite-accomplished piece of Northern California folk art (provenance - previous owner), it memorialized the members of a local poker club - all of them presumably serving with the Air Force at the Presidio of Monterey. Six anthropomorphic horses, three ladies and three gents, grinned widely - the men dressed in military uniforms and the women displaying stylized Air Force insignia on their dresses. The Presidio - US Army installation, which houses the Defence Language Institute Foreign Language Center - has been home to the 517th Training Group of the US Air Force (under various names), since WWII. Very good .

California Steam Navigation Company
Steamboat Helen Hensley Billhead
Stockton, CA, California Steam Navigation Company, 1861. Printed document, partially filled in manuscript in brown ink; 4 1/4 x 6 3/4; pale-blue stock, printed and ruled in black; old, intersecting crease lines; a bit of age toning along creases; in very good condition. The California Steam Navigation Company was founded and incorporated in 1854 with the purpose of consolidating competing steamship companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and along the San Joaquin and the Sacramento rivers. It quickly became very successful and gained near-monopoly of the trade by buying out bancrupted competitors. It would later also offer ocean routes from San Francisco to British Columbia and south to San Diego. Despite its early success, the rise of railroads began negatively impacting the company's profits and in 1871 - its assets were purchased by the Pacific Railroad and it ceased to exist. The Helen Hensley - a sidewheel steamer - was one of the original vessels consolidated into the company in 1854. The boat was built by Samuel J. Hensley (1817 - 1866), President of the California Steam Navigation Company. He had come overland to California from Kentucky in 1843 and had struck it rich during the Gold Rush. He would play an important role in early California politics and ultimately - in California achieving statehood. Very good .

Cameron, Dr. Howard
A Letter, Regarding Then California Governor Hiram Warren
Sacramento, California, By the author, 1911. On the doctor's stationary, typed, and signed in manuscript; also included is the original envelope; 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, text to recto only; two faint, vertical creases, else very minor wear; envelope with age-toning and spotting. A truly-bizarre letter, it was addressed to one E. F. Stewart, presumably an aide to the Governor, by Dr. Howard Cameron, Ocultist and Aurist (several period media advertisements and business directories alternately list Dr. Cameron as an eye-ear-nose-throat doctor). He informed Stewart he could possibly get the Governor admitted to the hospital at a reduced rate, as a previous eye surgery had not turned out quite up to the doctor's standards. Then, the letter took a weird turn, where the latter mentioned that on the previous visit, the Governor's clothes had been in bad shape, so Dr. Cameron had handed him a discarded suit of his own. Though research has not revealed much about this particular event in the Governor's life, it is a bit of a stretch to imagine the highly-successful and prominent Hiram Johnson (1866 - 1945) in tattered clothes and asking for a discount on a hospital visit. Very good .

McEwe, Arthur
Arthur Mcewen's Letter. Vol. I, No. 2
San Francisco, By the author, 1894. First Edition. First edition; 14 x 10 1/2, folded in half; pp. [1], 2-4; small nick to upper left corner; second leaf with a closed tear and creasing to upper corner, affecting two words; very good- condition. A single issue of a short-lived, 19th-century San Francisco periodical, it was published from February, 1894 until June of 1895, for a total of 49 issues. A crusading newspaper, especially concerned with the corruption of city officials and the power and influence of "big-money" businesses, it targeted particularly often The Southern Pacific Railroad and the author's personal nemesis - Leland Stanford. Arthur McEwen (1851 - 1907) began his journalistic career with the Virginia City Evening Chronicle in the 1870s, before moving to San Francisco to become the Managing Editor of William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Examiner. He also wrote several works of fiction, which were published in various periodicals. He would eventually move to the East Coast to help John Wanamaker (1838 - 1922) in his crusade against "political machines." . Very good .
