Adams, Amos (Compiler) - Journal of the Proceedings of the Twelfth Annual Session of the California State Grange, Held at Grangers' Hall, Sacramento, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, 1884

San Francisco, California, Carlos White Printing Co. Steam Printers, 1884. First Edition. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [1], 4-71; off-white wraps, printed and ruled with an elaborate border; chips to tips of spine; faint spotting and foxing to wraps (not affecting readability); in good condition. A scarce work from an illusive San Francisco publisher, it documented the proceedings of the California branch of the Grange - officially named The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The social organization, being the oldest American agricultural advocacy group with a national scope, was founded after the Civil War - in 1867. It would claim credit for the ideas of rural free mail delivery, the Farm Credit System, etc. What was most unusual of the organization at the time was that women and teenagers, "old enough to draw a plow," were encouraged to participate in it. Furthermore, it was mandatory that four of the organization's elected positions could be held only by women. Many local granges were established, including the California State Grange, which was founded in 1873 in Napa. Good .
