Writings on the Spiritual Life, A Selection of Works of Hugh, Adam, Achard, Richard, Walter, and Godfrey of St Victor.
2013 Hardback. 614 p., 1 colour ill., 152 x 229 mm, Languages: English; Victorine Texts in Translation (VTT 4). ISBN 9782503548487.
¶ Present volume collects works on spiritual life of the most influential religious writers of the Middle Ages. The Canons following the Rule of St Augustine at St Victor in Paris were some of the most influential religious writers of the Middle Ages. They combined exegesis and spiritual teaching in a theology that was deeply rooted in tradition but also attuned to current developments in the schools of Paris. This selection of their writings on the spiritual life is divided into three sections. The first presents three works by Achard and Richard which treat the development of Christian life from the beginnings of conversion to the perfection of love and contemplation. Prayer, meditation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are the subjects of the works by Hugh and Richard included in the second section. The final section presents poetical, exegetical and homiletic works honoring Mary by Hugh, Adam, Richard and Godfrey. This rich and representative sampling of Victorine works is a clear window into a world that still has much to offer modern readers interested in spirituality, medieval or moder. The editor of this volume is Christopher P. Evans (PhD, St Louis University; Department of Theology, University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX), the editor of Hildegard of Bingen's Explanatio symboli sancti Athanasii (2007), Vita sancti Disibodi, Vita sancti Ruperti and the Triginta octo questionum solutiones (forthcoming; Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis) and Radulphus Ardens: The Questions on the Sacraments (2010).

Evgenia Moiseeva
Brepols - Institut d'études Augustiniennes, 2024 Paperback, 550 pages, Size:160 x 245 mm, Language(s):French, Latin. ISBN 9782851213310.
¶ Summary The book analyzes the origin and development of the notion of the will in Saint Augustine's oeuvre. Organized chronologically, this study starts with an overview of the notion of the will in philosophical and Christian traditions anterior to Augustine as well as in Manichaeism (part 1). Part 2 shows that Augustine turns to the notion of the will in his early works in order to explain the origin of evil. At this stage, inspired by Stoicism and the works of Cicero, Augustine equates human will to power, potestas, and believes that good will is always capable to accomplish a good action on its own. Later, in the midst of anti-Manichaean polemics, Augustine recognizes the power that good and bad habits possess over the human soul, but continues to assert will's dominance over passions and habits (part 3). Subsequently, an extensive reading of the Scripture, especially of Paul's Epistles, leads Augustine to assert that will's capacity to act well or badly depends on the source where will takes its delight, rather than on its obedience to the mind (part 4). At the time when he writes his Confessions, Augustine is convinced that after original sin, human will lost its capacity to delight in the spiritual reality. By consequence, human will is unable to act well on its own. Only divine grace can restore will's capacity to delight in God freely and to act well.
Descartes and Medicine. Problems, Responses and Survival of a Cartesian Discipline
Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 484 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, Language(s):English, Italian. ISBN 9782503594613.
¶ Summary This volume provides a more exhaustive interpretation of René Descartes' medical views and its reception in the seventeenth century. Filling the gap in the recent scholarship, the contributions in the volume follow four axes: exegetical, textual, philosophical, and contextual. Authors in this book deal with Descartes' physiology, anatomy, and therapy by reconstructing Cartesian texts, detailing possible medical and philosophical sources, discussing medical collaborations and oppositions, and exploring obscurities and failures in Descartes' medicine. In laying bare the more promising issues of Cartesian programme and discussing the reception and opposition in the seventeenth century, the volume also uncovers the limitations within his interpretation, ultimately revealing a more nuanced application of his methodology to a field of natural philosophy. While medical studies play a not secondary role in Descartes' entire work, the volume aims to discuss in detail the importance of medicine as a suitable field to understand Cartesian philosophy from a significant perspective in seventeenth-century Europe.
