¶ This volume includes a collection of reworked articles which the author, during the last twenty years, dedicated to the origins and conditions constitutive of Christian philosophical-theological thought. From the earliest centuries of the Christian era, human reason was submitted to a particular formal conditioning, in so far as it was necessarily obliged to confront the contents of a divine revelation recognized as necessarily 'true'. The medieval Latin scholar was induced by the social and cultural peculiarities of his time to confront a model of thought which imposes a decisive subordination of natural knowledge ? demonstrated to be imperfect and inconclusive ? to the certainties assured by the faith. The production of this model of philosophia, sensibly different from the dominant paradigms in the classical period, rooted itself in the critical redimensioning of reason introduced into the West by Cicero. Departing from the observation of the failure of the philosophical aspirations of antiquity, the Christian intellectuals effected an operative 'overturning' of the conditions of veridical knowledge. The new wisdom was not the result of a pure interference of religion in the field of rational science; it was, however, directed by a conscious 'conversion' of the philosophers and fulfilled on two sides: on that of the faith, which requires earthly knowledge in order to defend itself from misunderstandings and heresies; and on that of reason, which allows itself to draw upon supernatural revelation for the possession of regulatory principles which guide it in the study of natural things. This book investigates the development of this approach during the course of the centuries which precede, in the West, the rediscovery of Aristotelian epistemology: from Augustine to Boethius, from John Scottus Eriugena to Anselm of Aosta. It moves to the point of describing the return of this methodological approach, at the end of the Medieval Scholastic period, in the results of the anti-Aristotelian critique carried out by the men of the Renaissance in the recovering of a model of thought which had dominated in the Patristic and Early Medieval periods. ¶ L'essence Perlee du Secret est un corpus d'instructions rDzogs chen rattache au personnage clef de cette tradition dans l'ecole tibetaine dite des Anciens (rNying ma pa): l'illustre pandit indien Vimalamitra. Jusqu'a tres recemment, cette tradition etait consideree comme relativement jeune et ses pretentions historiques douteuses, voire trop remaniees et reorganisees a date tardive pour etre reellement credibles. Neanmoins, certains elements contredisent maintenant cette vision fortement influencee par les ecoles reformees du bouddhisme tibetain et tendent au contraire a la crediter de l'anciennete a laquelle elle a justement droit. Ces elements demontrent ainsi que la formation des cycles d'instructions rDzogs chen sont bien plus anciens qu'on ne le croyait et surtout qu'ils nous presentent un etat de cette litterature deja parfaitement structure a date ancienne, suggerant ainsi serieusement l'origine indienne que la tradition leur attribue. Une boucle est donc bouclee lorsque la critique tibetologique occidentale parvient a justifier ou confirmer l'anciennete avouee par la tradition elle-meme. Dans le domaine de la philologie et de l'histoire litteraire, cette anciennete a des consequences de taille car tout le lexique qu'on jugeait jusqu'alors comme une innovation post-dynastique nous apparait petri d'une antiquite seculaire qui rend plus complexe encore l'origine de ce genre litteraire dans la tradition Bon po. Les phenomenes d'intertextualite entr Bon po et rNying ma pa prennent alors une importance considerable et une portee encore peu soupconnee dans l'evolution de ces deux ecoles. Languages: French.

¶ La reconnaissance du miracle suscita des discussions theologiques dans le christianisme comme dans l'islam. Mais alors qu'une pratique du miracle sur les tombes des saints chretiens est attestee par les collections de Miracula, la litterature hagiographique musulmane reste generalement sobre enl la matiere, meme lorsqu'il s'agit de saints reputes pour leurs charismes. Les articles de ce volume tentent de determiner les raisons de ces reticences et leurs rapports avec les circonstances historiques. Bien que de nombreux miracles soient rapportes dans les Traditions, le Prophete de l'islam ne se signale pas par des miracles spectaculaires, contrairement a Jesus, considere comme le thaumaturge par excellence. En revanche, Muhammad, recevant la revelation coranique a travers l'archange Gabriel, a ete sujet a de multiples visions. Ce contraste entre les modeles, poses par les fondateurs respectifs de l'islam et du christianisme, pourrait expliquer que les miracles, dans l'hagiographie musulmane, soient plutot constitues d'apparitions, de reves ou de pouvoir d'ordre initiatique, alors que les miracles a dominante thaumaturgique abondent dans les Vies des saints chretiens. L'etudes des mircles conduit enfin a des comparaisons interessantes entre christianisme et islam. La proportion entre miracles in vita et post mortem (tombeaux, reliques, images) semble constituer une difference majeure entre les deux religions, tandis que le recensement et la comparaison des topoi menent a des rapprochements feconds, etant entendu que ces topoipeuvent etre reinterpretes a chaque epoque. ¶ Cet ouvrage constitue les Actes du quatrieme colloque, co-organise par la Section des Sciences Religieuses de l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes et l'Universite Hebraique de Jerusalem, qui eut lieu a Paris, les 1er et 2 fevrier 1999. Son objet etait moins d'etudier l'influence qu'ont pu exercer les grandes religions de l'Orient sur celles de l'Europe que de retrouver, de decrire et d'analyser la construction, historiographique, spirituelle ou bien imaginaire, de quelques ?«origines orientales?». Des mouvements de retour au sources, reelles ou mythiques, traversent les diverses religions de l'Europe, du Moyen Age a nos jours, constituant souvent l'element dynamique de leur evolution tandis que paradoxalement ils suscitent et alimentent aussi les fondamentalismes: croisades et mythes de croisades, pelerinages, travaux d'historiens et d'erudits, editions de textes, constitutions des formes de critiques, experiences mystiques.
