(Shakespeare, William)
"First Edition of Hamlet" in Harper's Weekly (January 17, 1857)
New York, Harper's Weekly, 1857. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. Volume I, Number 3. Very good in wrappers with light wear to spine, where disbound, and some foxing, otherwise clean and bright with hardly any where. Interesting article about the discovery of the "First Edition of Hamlet" (p. 47) found in a Dublin shop which prints, for the first time, the last few lines of the play, beginning with Fortinbras saying "Where is this bloudy sight?" The passage is quoted in the article herein. This edition matches another rare edition that is missing the last page but contains the first page (not present in the Dublin volume), both supposedly published in 1603. Annoucement is made of a new edition of Shakespeare's works being prepared by Mr. Halliwell (the man who bought the Dublin edition) and Mr. Collier. Also, Southey's sonnet "Winter" appears on p. 37. Also, lengthy travel essay "Modern Naples" with three large illustrations (pp. 40-43); "Original Letter of Thomas Campbell" to C. Patmore, "father of the young poet Coventry Patmore." (p. 47). Also, humorous description by Wm Hazlitt of Wordsworth from a letter of Landor's quoted in "Poets Painted by Each Other." Of more local interest are two articles" "Chat: The New Female Metamorphosis" (p. 35), about women becoming more masculine in apparel, walking the streets of New York City, and "Effect of Literary Occupation Upon the Duration of Life" (p. 34) about the ill effects of the sedentary life on one's health. Very Good.
