"The Heavy Cannonading in Maryland: Occupation of Crederick bky McClellan--The Retreat of the Rebels" in The New York Herald (September 15, 1862)
New York, 1862. First Edition. 0 pp. Newspaper. Front-page map of Maryland and Virginia. Original and complete issue in good condition, some pages uncut, minjor foxing, two holes (that don't effect essential information), short tears to middle of page at fold. This historic artifact has many important features related to a crucial period of the Civil War, the days leading up to the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest battle in American history. The front page prints a large, highly detailed map of the area of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia affectded by General Lee's recent invasion North. It reports on the lukewarm reception he and his bedraggled received in Frederick, the enthusiastic reception given Genrals McClellan and Burnside (p. 4) and inscomplete news of Jackson's attack on Harpers Ferry, based on the sounds heard in the North of the cannons and the report of two witnesses who were in the area, captured by Jackson but set free by Jackson. Naturally, since news travelled slowly then, there is no mention of the fact that on September 15 Jackson captured Harpers Ferry, the Union's General Miles surrendered and died the next day from a battle wound, and Jackson headed for Sharpsburg/Antietam. It is interesting to read, on pp. 1 and 4 in two separate articles, of the optimistic feeling the newspaper's reporters had about General Miles and the unlikely scenario of his surrenduring "as his means of defense or retreat are ample to secure his safety." There is also a report of Jackson attending two services "on the last Sabbath, dressed in his usual service suit of well worn grey, with the jaunty cap. He appeared to pay deep attention to the service.". Good.
