With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated August 1875) bound in at end. First published in 1852, Allen's well-known life of Nelson is notable in that he was the last biographer to claim personal acquaintance with some who had known Nelson personally. NMM II/1, 962 (recording the first edition).

Roy. 8vo., with a fine engraved frontispiece, very neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; contemporary full calf, back with eight double rules in gilt, second compartment with original red leather label lettered in gilt, sprinkled edges, upper hinge cracked (but binding entirely sound) else a remarkably crisp, clean copy. The frontispiece depicts Jesus Christ holding a scroll headed 'The Christian Faith' accompanied by Moses with the Tablets, above these two figures a number of cherubs disport themselves in the sky. The Royalist divine Richard Allestree is generally regarded as the primary, if not sole, author, an attribution first given in Nichols' Anecdotes, ii. 603.

Sm. 8vo., contemporary full tree calf, SPCK roundel blocked in blind on upper board, back with six bands ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, an unusually bright, clean copy. Complete with half-title, and with the contemporary trade stamp of John Bird, bookbinder of Hatton Garden, on front paste-down. The Rivingtons were at this stage booksellers to SPCK. The Royalist divine Richard Allestree is generally regarded as the primary, if not sole, author, an attribution first given in Nichols' Anecdotes, ii. 603. SCARCE IN ANYTHING LIKE THIS CONDITION.

Printed for John Eyres, William Mount and Thomas Page,, 1735. 8vo., [?Second Edition], on laid paper, with fine woodcut frontispiece, and woodcut and printed titles, lengthy eighteenth century family succession on front and rear blank preliminaries, pencilled note on woodcut title; strongly bound in contemporary panelled calf, boards framed and blocked in blind, red sprinkled edges, uncut, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, boards moderately age-worn but newly furbished, a very good,crisp, clean copy in elegantly restored period binding. With the 'Moses' frontispiece and 'Cherubim' title, and complete with final advertisement leaf (often missing). 'Eyres' in imprint should read 'Eyre'. Title of 'Private Devotions' dated 1764 but with continuous pagination. Crisp copy of one of the leading Anglican devotional works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author [by popular consensus] was a tutor to Milton and author of several other devotional works. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. ESTC T26177 (recording the first edition of 1658).

THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF COLONEL ALEXANDER PHELPS HODGES, WHO SERVED AS CHIEF OF ALLIED LIAISON AND PROTOCOL FROM FEBRUARY 1947. Hodges's portrait appears at p.41. He was formerly leader of the British Military Mission to Siberia, 1918-1922, his personal account of which was published as 'BRITMIS' in 1931.
