BOURNAZEL, DIANE DE / GUÉGANT, AMELIE (Bookbinder):, Le Chant des Possibles. Marliac (Limousin) France 2018.
BOURNAZEL, DIANE DE / GUÉGANT, AMELIE (Bookbinder):
Le Chant des Possibles. Marliac (Limousin) France 2018.
. An exquisite artist's book, a magical work without words, completely handmade. The beautiful binding is by Amelie Guégant. Narrow folio. (13.8 x 33.2 cm) Lvs. (8). Seven double-page illustrations, fully illuminated by hand, using water colour, ink and collage. The images have a window cut in centre and are surrounded by a zigzag border. One leaf with small crease at lower corner. Original sprinkled paper boards, blue on gold coloured paper, handwritten title labels, housed in matching slipcase. Diane Bournazel (born 1956) is a French painter, printmaker and book illustrator represented in both private and public collections in France and elsewhere. Her works contain mystical stories or wordless poetry with themes that include nature, human relations, life and death. She uses drawing, painting, paper cutting and collage. This work features imaginary animals, people, flowers, etc all floating in a dreamlike setting. The book can be read from front or back and the reader is encouraged to create their own imaginative story. As a book artist, Diane de Bournazel is among the very best in seeing the livre dÕartiste as a total artistic creation, embracing all the special qualities of the codex form. She creates distinct and mysterious narratives, spurring us on to turn the pages, with her trademark papercutting opening windows between them, encouraging us to look forwards, backwards and beneath the surface. Subtle collage effects and gauffered edges invite us to touch the pages and to reanimate the books each time we return to them. Her themes are those of life and death itself, of childhood, love, loss and longing. Recognising that everyone experiences these universals as part of their own unique story, De BournazelÕs visual meditations are always open to interpretation and reinterpretation. Every encounter, even with the same book, yields new insights as new details appear and new connections are noticed between the pages. This is a rich symbolic world, full of unexpected resonances and symmetries.
