0. No Binding. Scrapbook, Oak Grove Campus, Flint, Michigan --Helen Brown's 1949 Tree Herbarium School Project with (64) specimens-- Signed "Helen Brown Lab D", on front pastedown. This herbarium was thoughtfully produced-- 22 pages of neatly hand-written 'characteristics', + an index to the specimens. Each page has a single specimen mounted on one side only with cellophane tape. She records each specimen with its scientific name, common name, and a bottom page number. One specimen is labeled "Oak Grove Campus / Flint / Oct. 1949," thus locating this collection in time and place. The cellophane tape is mostly unobtrusive, but some of the evergreen specimens are heavily taped down. Two evergreen specimens lack some needles. The album is housed in a custom-made box, and is intentionally disbound for simpler handling. Overall, in excellent condition. Very Good.

Bruehl wrote of his experience"..the beauty of this country lies in the people.. their faces are exciting with a.. beauty that has in it centuries of suffering ..Everywhere I found the people friendly and patient .. so completely unaffected that anything but a direct presentation of the scene before me seemed insincere". THOMAS FOWELL BUXTON - SIGNED PRESENTATION

African Slave Trade

London, John Murray. 1839, 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Book, A scarce and important 19th century British abolitionist's book concerning the slave trade in the Americas (including a brief section on the Republic of Texas). It also describes the death of enslaved people during various part of the slave trade, and discusses British relations with African nations. The book is inscribed, "William Talum from the Author." This is the second edition, published in 1839, the same year as the first edition. The original green cloth binding has been covered with decorated paper with hand-written labels. The front pastedowns, too, have been replaced. Still, a scarce book in any condition. Buxton's concerns extended over the whole field of "'aborigines' rights"- that is, colonial issues and the effect of white settlement on indigenous peoples. He was president of the Aborigines Protection Society, set up for "protecting the defenseless and promoting the advancement of uncivilized tribes. By the 1830s Buxton's main preoccupation became the continuing resilience of the Atlantic slave trade and its desolation and depopulation of Africa. After losing his parliamentary seat, published 'The African Slave Trade and Its Remedy'. This argued that Britain and other "Christian" nations were responsible for the systematic pillage of Africa by the slave trade, producing dependence and barbarism for Africa; that Africa's redemption lay in calling forth its own potentially rich resources, both natural and human (the latter exemplified in the Christian communities in the Caribbean and Sierra Leone); and that Africa's development as an equal trading partner could stifle the slave trade at its source. Originally named 'Carr's Moving and Storage' (a caption shows Fred Carr bought a building to sell new & used furniture), Carr eventually became a franchisee of North American Van Lines. This scrapbook's documentation ends in 1956, with no mention of what happened thereafter. 1949-1956 Photo Album/Scrapbook - post & string bound, clean and tight, measures 10" x 13". Most pages repaired at post-holes; front edges left in their found state. Rear-board has been repaired. Presents very nicely- attractive cover, white-ink inscriptions, advertising ephemera. Very Good.
