Cockton, Henry, The Life And Adventures Of Valentine Vox The Ventriloquist
Cockton, Henry
The Life And Adventures Of Valentine Vox The Ventriloquist
Walter Scott, London, circa 1890. First Thus, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. b/w. frontis. plate, contents, tacked in list of publisher's volumes (uniform with this); originally published in the monthly serial format, popularised by Charles Dickens, 'The Life And Adventures Of Valentine Vox The Ventriloquist'' was an immediate success, enjoying great popularity and acclaim. Illustrations by Thomas Onwhyn were a prominent feature of this, and most of Henry Cockton's later novels. The first three chapters are set 'in one of the most ancient and populous boroughs in the county of Suffolk', a thinly disguised Bury St. Edmunds. Valentine Vox teaches himself ventriloquism after seeing a performer in a local tavern, then uses his skills to create mayhem and mischief. Fearing this will lead him into trouble, his family send him to stay with his uncle Grimwood Goodman in London. This provides unlimited opportunities to perform pranks, such as disrupting political meetings, theatrical performances, educational lectures and social events. The novel contains no technical information about ventriloquism, and it is doubtful if the author had any practical knowledge of the subject. 22-page catalogue of publisher's titles to rear. Coleman, A. P. & W. A. Parks, Elementary Geology with special reference to Canada
Coleman, A. P. & W. A. Parks
Elementary Geology with special reference to Canada
J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd. London, 1930. Second Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. So many elementary text-books of Geology are available that it seems almost superfluous to add to the number. Geology, however, is a science embracing, not only general principles of world-wide importance, but the application of those principles to the working-out of the history of a given locality or country. In this work the general principles of geology are illustrated, as far as possible, by Canadian examples, and the geology of Canada is given especial prominence in the section devoted to Historical Geology. This method of treatment introduces the student to the subject by reference to localities and geological structures with which he is familiar and lays a local foundation on which the greater geological history of the whole world may be built. While the book is primarily intended as an introduction to general geology, the emphasis laid on Canadian geological history makes it suitable to those desiring an outline of the geology of Canada. From this point of view, it is hoped that the work will be acceptable to the general reader and to persons engaged in the mining industry in Canada. Revised Edition. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 379 pages. minor marking to covers & spine. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing front/rear pages, but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed. some calculations in ink to rear end-paper by previous owner. Top edge green. Gilt titles spine. Bumping & wear to corners & both ends of spine. illustrated by b/w. drawings, maps & photo's.. Includes index. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. The Theory of Conscious Harmony: from the Letters of Rodney Collin.
Robinson & Watkins Books Ltd, London, 1958. First Thus, Paperback. Very Good Condition. 9780722401521 Titles, contents & biographical note to front; Before Paulo Coelho and Echart Tolle, came Rodney Collin. Rodney Collin was closely associated with P. D. Ouspensky. In 1948 he moved to Mexico to carry on the study and practice of the ideas received from Ouspensky and Ouspensky's teacher, Gurdjieff. During the next few years he corresponded with a large number of people, from many walks of life, all over the world, who sought to understand the Fourth Way - a path of spiritual discipline to be pursued in everyday life. After his death in 1956 his letters were collected and edited by those who had been working with him, and were issued in the form of this book. "There is so much to do in preparation for the future, so many different fields in which harmony must come, and all by means of ordinary everyday men like ourselves...In individual men, harmony among fuctions; harmony between body, soul and spirit; harmony among its different members, harmony between its leader and its origin; in the great esoteric impulse launched through Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, harmony among all lines and groups; harmony between them, their founders and God; in the world, harmony among all branches of knowledge, all peoples, all esoteric lines," Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xii + 212. Colmer, Michael
Aztec Astrology: An Introduction
Blandford Press, London, 1995. First Edition, Paperback, Illustrated by: Peter Komarnyckyj. Near Fine Condition. 9780713724554 Welcome to the mysterious- yet previously neglected - world of Aztec astrology! The one proud, meso-American civilization of Mexico observed and interpreted the stars in a a unique way. Like all pre-Columbian societies, they were isolated from the rest of the world, with no reference points to Western or Eastern traditions- other than the same star patterns of the night sky. Yet, without a written alphabet they created a system of stargazing so astonishing that it can pinpoint accurately any one day in 370,000 years! Gathered into the pages of this seminal modern interpretation of their astrological system are some remarkable insights into human nature. Aztec society considered astrology intergral to daily life and based it upon a 20-day cycle derived from a complex, two-tier 'calender'. All human behavior was governed by the characteristics allied to the twenty-day picture 'glyphs' of the Alligator, Wind, House, Lizard, Serpent, Death, Deer, Rabbit, Water, Dog Monkey, Grass, Reed Size: 5.5 x 0.5 x 8.5 inches. 128 pages. The Poems of Jonathan Swift
Collier Books, New York, New York, U.S.A. 1962. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. black titles spine; "one of the most widely read prose writers in English, Swift has been generally kept out of the canon of English poetry. Yet the quality of his verse is so great that a genuine need exists for a fresh, new, truly representative edition that displays both the range and the extraordinary forcefulness of his poems. Padraic Colum, the distinguished Irish poet and critic, has for the first time collected Swift's best poetry in a new edition that demonstrates its importance for the modern reader. Rescuing Swift, as a poet, from the Romantic critics of the 19th century; the present selection demonstrates his energetic mind, his sense of drama, his detachment, his indignation, his moral passion and his tenderness. The result is a literary event of major importance."; a tight copy with minor fading to spine area; 126 pages. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1.
