Ramanuja on the Bhagavadgita: A Condensed Rendering of his Gitabhasya with Copious Notes and an Introduction
Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi, India, 1974. Reprint, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Titles, foreword to second edition, preface, list of abbreviations, contents & introduction to front; followed by this scholarly study of one of the lesser known works of this Indian philosopher. Ramanuja also known as Ramanujacharya, was an Indian Hindu philosopher, guru and a social reformer. He is noted to be one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism. His Vishishtadvaita (qualified non-dualism) philosophy has competed with the Dvaita (theistic dualism) philosophy of Madhvacharya, and Advaita (non-dualism) philosophy of Adi Shankara, together the three most influential Vedantic philosophies of the 2nd millennium. Ramanuja presented the epistemic and soteriological importance of bhakti, or the devotion to a personal God (Vishnu in Ramanuja's case) as a means to spiritual liberation. His theories assert that there exists a plurality and distinction between Atman (soul) and Brahman (metaphysical, ultimate reality), while he also affirmed that there is unity of all souls and that the individual soul has the potential to realize identity with the Brahman. Burgess, Anthony
Flame into Being: The Life and Work of D H Lawrence
Heinemann, London, 1985. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780434098187 Burgess considered D. H. Lawrence to be one of the pillars of English literature and indeed a Modernist writer whose work had changed the face of the novel in the early 20th century. Flame into Being was first published in 1985 to mark the centenary of Lawrence's birth and gave Burgess the chance to write a celebratory but also a brilliant (and short) introduction to the major books in Lawrence's oeuvre. It is a beautifully written, entertaining and thoroughly accessible gateway to D. H. Lawrence aimed at both the general reader and students. Between his death and the outbreak of the Second World War Lawrence was remembered as a doubtful prophet but almost totally ignored as a writer. He had written a dirty book and had his exhibition of dirty paintings raided by the police; the brilliance of Sons and Lovers and Women in Love had either not been acknowledged or had been occluded'. Flame into Being examines Lawrence's work in its entirety, not just the well-known novels, and how, in the years following the second World War, he gained recognition as one of the twentieth century's most original and outstanding authors. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xi + 211. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Price clipped inside book. Gilt titles spine. Multiple copies available this title. orange cloth. Burn, Robert
The Complete Poems and Songs of Robert Burns
Geddes & Grosset, Glasgow, Scotland, 2010. Reprint, Hardcover (Printed Laminated Boards). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. 9781855349827 Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. As well as making original compositions, Burns also collected folk songs from across Scotland, often revising or adapting them. His poem (and song) "Auld Lang Syne" is often sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year), and "Scots Wha Hae" served for a long time as an unofficial national anthem of the country. Other poems and songs of Burns that remain well known across the world today include "A Red, Red Rose", "A Man's a Man for A' That", "To a Louse", "To a Mouse", "The Battle of Sherramuir", "Tam o' Shanter" and "Ae Fond Kiss". Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 480 pages. Dust Jacket un-clipped. White titles spine. Includes glossary & indexes of titles & of first lines. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
