Franco Sciannameo (ed)
Italian Film Music, 1950s-1970s. Between Tradition, Innovation, and Internationalisation
Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 454 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Illustrations:32 b/w, 48 musical examples, Language(s):English, Italian. ISBN 9782503608464.
¶ Summary The music heard in Italian cinema along the arch of the three decades highlighted in this book, has not only made history but has become an unspoken of patrimony of humanity. This book provides a platform to build a lasting tribute to those composers who were, indeed, the ?sounding? protagonists of hundreds of films - from Fellini's «La dolce vita» to Tornatore's «Cinema Paradiso» to a myriad of cultural documentaries and productions made for cinema and television. The book is divided into three parts comprising essays on the music of Nino Rota, lesser-known composers yet important on the national circuit like Carpi, Gervasio, Vlad, and Chailly, and four essays dedicated to the towering figure of Ennio Morricone whose legacy will continue to hover over Italian cinema of the 50s-70s for many decades to come. An introductory essay, 17 chapters annotated and provided with musical examples, tables, and iconographic material written by internationally known academics specialised in Italian film music; bibliographies and abstracts following each essay; biographies of the contributing authors; and an index organized by names and subjects, make this volume an indispensable research tool free of geopolitical barriers and ideological constrains in the bourgeoning field of Film Music. Kate Fraser
Cooking Times
HarperCollins 2010 Paperback, 240pp. In a salute to our increasing love affair with nostalgia, Kate Fraser has put together a beguiling collection of recipes and 'anecdotes' from the kitchens of a series of fictitious characters. Between them, these engaging men and women represent a retrospective view of New Zealand kitchens and culinary traditions. While the characters are fictitious, the recipes come from the author's family collection, updated to include modern ingredients, equipment and techniques. together they represent a culinary journey from the 1930s to the present day, documenting our changing tastes. We learn about hard times in the high country in the 1930s with Ettie, growing up in a 1940s village with Janet, see retirement through the eyes of May in the 50s, watch Rosemary grow up in the 60s and see Marion through her first dinner party. We turn vegetarian with Peter and Roz as they travel the world in the 70s, then we open a cordon bleu cafe with Barbara in the 1980s. Simon is a popular television chef in the 90s and we come full circle with Kate who joins the Slow Food Movement in 2000. While each is enchanting in its own right, together they combine to present a very tasty overview, in recipes and traditions, of the development of our national food culture. (ISBN: 9780730445586). John Frow
Genre
Taylor & Francis, 2006. Paperback. Pp: 171. Genre is a key means by which we categorize the many forms of literature and culture. But it is also much more than that: in talk and writing, in music and images, in film and television, genres actively generate and shape our knowledge of the world. Understanding genre as a dynamic process rather than a set of stable rules, this book explores: the relation of simple to complex genres the history of literary genre in theory the generic organisation of implied meanings the structuring of interpretation by genre the uses of genre in teaching. John Frow's lucid exploration of this fascinating concept will be essential reading for students of literary and cultural studies. ISBN: 9780415280631. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Genius of Photography : How photography has changed our lives.
Quadrille Publishing, 2014 Softcover, 256 pages, ENG, 295 x 235 x 20 mm, in perfect condition, Over 170 colour & black and white photographs. ISBN 9781849495233.
¶ Published to huge critical acclaim to support the major BBC television series on this ever more influential art form, this landmark book explores the key events and the key images that have marked the development of photography. At the heart of the book is a quest to understand what makes a truly great photograph. What is it that makes a photograph by Nan Goldin or Henri Cartier Bresson stand out among the millions of others taken by all of us every single day? The Genius of Photography examines the evolution of photography in its wider context: social, political, economic, technological and artistic. It also brings a critical perspective and a strong aesthetic sense to the subject. Beginning with the earliest days of the photograph in the 1840s and ending with an examination of the state of photography today and the effect that the 'digital revolution' will have, the book challenges not only how we look at a photograph but what it is in a physical sense. It examines all the different genres of photography from landscape and portraiture to news and reportage. It also tells the great stories behind many of the world's most iconic photographs and reveals the extraordinary characters - from Louis Daguerre and Cindy Sherman, Paul Strand and Robert Capa - who have made and defined this art form. Provocative and enlightening by turns, this is a major book for anyone who wants to know more about one of the most important art forms of the 21st century.

The Kuklapolitan Courier. Vol. 1, No. 5. April, 1949
Chicago, No publisher Given, 1949. Wraps. No publisher given. Chicago: 1949. Single sheet folded into four pages. Black and white photos and illustrations abound! With a stated circulation of 50,880. Fifth issue of this small magazine issued by the Kukla, Fran and Ollie Show, essentially an early fanzine for fans of the show. The Kuklapolitan Courier began in 1948, increasing in circulation until 1950, when it changed to a book format and was issued as a yearbook. Kukla, Fran and Ollie was ostensibly a television show for children, created by Burr Tilllstrom, in 1947. It involved puppets interacting with a woman, Fran. Using subtle humor based on the characters of the show, Kukla, Fran and Ollie became more of a hit with adults, and ran in various formats from 1947 to 1957. This issue of the Courier celebrates the show going national, behind the scenes photos, and a subtle advertisement for RCA, one of the show's sponsors. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. General toning. Minor soiling, creasing and wrinkling. Good .
