Kalle Lasn
Culture Jam
Harper Paperbacks 2000 Paperback, 251pp. "An eloquent call to arms to end the 'branding' of America and return to authentic culture. America is no longer a country but a multimillion-dollar brand, says Kalle Lasn and his fellow 'culture jammers'. The founder of Adbusters magazine, Lasn aims to stop the branding of America by changing the way information flows; the way institutions wield power; the way television stations are run; and the way the food, fashion, automobile, sports, music, and culture industries set agendas. With a courageous and compelling voice, Lasn deconstructs the advertising culture and our fixation on icons and brand names. And he shows how to organize resistance against the power trust that manages the brands by 'uncooling' consumer items, by 'dermarketing' fashions and celebrities, and by breaking the 'media trance' of our TV-addicted age. A powerful manifesto by a leading media activist, 'Culture Jam' lays the foundations for the most significant social movement of the early twenty-first century -- a movement that can change the world and the way we think and live. ", (ISBN: 9780688178055). Good.

BE, mercaterfonds - fondsmercator, 2013 Hardback, 290x225mm, 256p, 200 colour illustrations, English edition. ISBN 9789462300323.
¶ Even more than literature, it is the vernacular that has inspired the American artist Tony Oursler. Since the late 1970s, Oursler has forcefully turned the medium of video back on the dominant culture at large, through the use of technologies such as television and film. Oursler's response to mass media's conformist narratives and paranoid discourse - beginning with his first grotesque videos up until his more recent phantasmagorical installations - is to oppose their unhinged scenarios and psychotic ramblings. Even when using media that is primarily visual, Tony Oursler has always taken particular care with the words he places in the mouth or mind of his characters. His poetic writing - which also takes on psychoanalysis and religion - has set this American artist apart as one of the most interesting and powerful writers of his generation. This volume is the first work exclusively dedicated to Tony Oursler's poetic texts. It brings together fifty full transcriptions of video works created between 1977 and 2013, presented in their creative context and accompanied by an extensively illustrated scholarly analysis. Composed by the artist himself as a bouquet in which language explodes into a spectrum of colours and registers. Vox Vernacular provides us with an authentic anthology of his work. Laurent Busine is director of MAC's, working in collaboration with Denis Gielen.

David Lavery
Deny All Knowledge. Reading the X-Files
Faber and Faber 1996 Paperback, 233pp. The 'X Files' is as complex and controversial a phenomenon as the television series 'Twin Peaks' was in the early 1990s. Mysterious and macabre episodes, led by fictional FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, captivate devotees week after week. Contributors to this volume examine the same intricate storylines that challenge viewers. Theoretically sophisticated, however, this book provides a forum for the creative process and a discussion of the state of popular culture as a whole. Part police drama, part horror story, and part science fiction, the show has dared to suggest with great seriousness the incredible charge that the United States government is involved in a vast conspiracy with former Nazi and Japanese scientists to assist alien beings in peforming experiments - including genetic hybridisation - on American citizens. Why does a hit series happen when it does? Is there a connection between the coming and going of 'Twin Peaks' and the Bush presidency? It the 'X Files' a Clinton-era phenomenon, a product of historical, cultural and psychological factors operative in the mid 1990s? Armed with an arsenal of critical methodology, contributors deal with these and many more topics, among folklore and myth; the development of cult TV; the show as a manifestation of a major sea of change in the nature of mass communication; cultural dialogue about law and order, freedom and safety, truth and lies; various feminist interpretations; and finally, drawing on sources as diverse as Foucault, Sartre, and Lacan, the essays examine the show from adaptations of body invasion and vampirism and modern horror films to psychoanalysis and semiotic structuralism. Lewis, Justin
The Ideological Octopus : Exploration of Television and Its Audience
New York, Routledge, (1992). orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, x,218 pp. PAPERBACK.. Minor rubbing. VG.
¶ At the beginning of the century, two activities dominated most people's lives: working and sleeping. As the end of the century approaches, we can add a third: watching television. We know remarkably little about watching TV, despite its predominance and the forty years of research it has generated. How, in the most precise and intricate sense, does television influence the way we think about the world? What ideological role does it play in contemporary culture? Does TV control us or do we control it? The Ideological Octopus assesses our progress in responding to these questions, and offers some answers of its own. In the last ten years, with the emergence of semiology and cultural studies in particular, there have been a number of significant theoretical developments in our understanding of television's power. This book is the first to provide an overview of these developments, while also incorporating more traditional approaches. Justin Lewis suggests that television influences us ambiguously and unpredictably, depending upon who we are and how we think. Ambiguity does not blunt television's power, it simply diversifies it into a very modern kind of omnipotence. Employing two major qualitative audience studies, one covering TV news and a second covering The Cosby Show , The Ideological Octopus illustrates its argument with findings that are both unexpected and disturbing" - publisher's description.
