Lacking leaf 489.OCLC Number:14308346 Notes: The augmented first edition of an anthology of works on baths and bathing by more than 70 Greek, Latin, and Arab authors, including Celsus, Petrus de Abano, Savonarola, Avicenna, and Ê»Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Wāfid. Colophon (leaf 488r) reads: Venetijs apud haeredes Lucaeantonij Iuntae. Edited by Tommaso Giunta, whose dedicatory preface, dated July 7, 1552, is addressed to Francesco Contarini (1477-1558), son of cavalliere Zaccaria Contarini, and later, prefect of Padua. Woodcuts: large Giunta lily device on title page; historiated white initials; illustrations (all full-page) include a pictorial map of the region surrounding Venice; drawing of a pool at a health resort, in which men and women, including a blind man and a man on crutches, are using the water for recreation, cures, washing, and drinking; drawing of thermal baths having separate rooms for steam, showering, and warm and cold pools; and a plan for a three-prong system of baths, having hot and cool pools, fountains and underground channels directing water flow. Text printed in roman type, with some italic, in two columns; upper case reference letters in margins; printed marginal references in small roman type. Includes (leaves 307r-308r) "De thermis quae ad Timavi ostia sunt incerto authore", with prefatory remarks by the editor Tommaso Giunta. According to Giunta, the treatise derives from letters written by Giacomo Valvasone, but in the contents list on leaf 1â‚..r, the word "Incerto" has been cancelled using a type rule, and authorship has been assigned to Jovita Rapicius. Leaves 489-497 (signature 3q¹â°) are an addition, containing "De balneis compendium ex Hippocrate et Galeno" by Giovanni Antonio Sicco. Includes alphabetical indexes of authors represented in the collection, and names of baths.. Première édition de ce précieux recueil publié par Tomasso Giunta (1494-1566), réunissant les principaux traités touchant les bains et les eaux thermales composés depuis l'Antiquité classique jusqu'à la Renaissance, formant une histoire complète de la balnéologie tant occidentale qu'orientale. L'ouvrage regroupe les textes de plus de 70 auteurs parmi lesquels on retrouve Aristote, Avicenne, Hippocrate, Galien, Seneque, mais aussi Savonarole, Fuchs, Conrad Gessner, Agricola, etc. Il contient la description d'environ 200 lieux de thermalisme et plusieurs des traités présents dans ce recueil ne sont connus que grâce à cette édition. Le traité de Gessner sur les sources thermales de Suisse et d'Allemagne y paraît pour la première fois. L'édition est illustrée de 5 gravures sur bois représentant le plan d'un bain naturel près de Pozzuoli (f. 287), les machines pour les bains de Fideris en Suisse (f. 295), une très grande vue des bains de Plombières en France (f. 299), une carte de la côte Adriatique dans la zone de Trieste (f. 306 v°) et la représentation d'un bain romain (f. 489 v°). Manque la dernière gravure dans notre ouvrage. On trouve également de jolies lettrines historiées. Belle impression sur deux colonnes en lettres rondes de Tommaso et Giovanni Maria Giunta, fils de Lucantonio Giunta. .
