Fisheries and Marine Service. 1974. First French language edition. RODERICK L. HAIG-BROWN.
Silver: The Life Story of an Atlantic Salmon.
First Edition. London. A. & C. Black, Ltd. 1931. First Edition. Octavo (7 x 5). 96 pp. Color illustrated frontispiece drawn by Capt. J. P. Moreton showing a hooked salmon leaping at the foot of a waterfall. Chapter vignettes. This was Haig-Brown's first book and it was the precursor to a magnificent literary career. The book is bound in the original bright green cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Pictorial dust jacket (May McGregor's art deco illustrated dust jacket is perfect). An impressively beautiful example of this book. By far the nicest example I’ve seen in 30 years, and it’s likely the finest you’ll see as well. The book is in fine condition in an equally fine dust jacket.

RODERICK L. HAIG-BROWN.
The Tall Trees Fall. A Novel of Pacific Coast Loggers.
London. Collins. 1943. First United Kingdom Edition. Octavo (8 x 5 1/2). 288 pp. including glossary. Roderick Haig-Brown spent a good deal of his early life working in the logging camps in Washington state and on Vancouver Island in British Columbia as a cruiser and surveyor; his novel of loggers and their way of life was based on first-hand experience. The first United Kingdom edition was titled The Tall Trees Fall to appeal to a U. K. audience unfamiliar with the title of the American edition, Timber. A Novel of Pacific Coast Loggers. The glossary is worth a few minutes of your time. It explains the terms used by loggers to describe their trade and it will help with the reading of the text. The book is bound in brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Pictorial dust jacket. A nice book. Fine in a very good dust jacket with light edge wear.

RODERICK L. HAIG-BROWN.
Tillbaka Till Floden. En Berattelse om Laxens Vandringar. {Return to the River}.
Stockholm, Sweden. Albert Bonniers Forlag. 1943. First Swedish Edition. Octavo (8 1/2 x 6). 231 pp. Illustrated color frontispiece. Illustrated with sixteen black and white plates by Charles De Feo. The plates in this edition are somewhat better than those in the American and Canadian editions because the Swedish publisher utilized a better grade of paper. Foreword by Professor Bertil Hanstrom. Haig-Brown’s compelling story about the life history of Spring, (a Chinook or Tyee salmon - your choice), from its birth and migration to the sea, and its return years later to its river of birth as an adult. The Swedish edition is a rare book. Bonniers published just a few hundred hard bound copies in 1943. Sales were slow, and in 1950 the publisher destroyed the remaining unsold copies. WorldCat finds one example in an institutional library, in Sweden. The book is bound in turquoise cloth with silver titles on the spine and a silver salmon on the front board. Pictorial dust jacket. A stunningly beautiful book. Fine in a fine dust jacket.

RODERICK L. HAIG-BROWN.
Timber: A Novel of the Pacific Coast Loggers. {Inscribed & Signed by Roderick Haig-Brown & with a Holograph Letter Signed by Haig-Brown Presenting this, His Personal Copy of Timber}.
New York. William Morrow & Company. 1942. First Edition. Octavo (8 x 6). [vi], [1-2], 3-410 pp. including glossary. Inscribed and signed by Roderick Haig-Brown in the year of publication on a tipped-in leaf facing the half-title page presenting Timber to the book editor of the Cincinnati Ohio Times Newspaper, Mona Harrop McElfresh. Blind-stamped on the tipped-in leaf: "Above Tide, / Campbell River, / British Columbia." Tipped-in on the reverse of the front end paper is a lengthy holograph letter penned by Haig-Brown addressed to Mrs. McElfresh discussing Timber’s narrative and Roderick’s motivations detailing his descriptions of the book’s protagonists; he thanks her for the favorable review. At the end of the letter, Haig-Brown writes that signing Mrs. McElfresh’s copy of Timber would be prohibitively expensive; shipping it to Campbell River and returning the book to her in Ohio, pointing out the high costs of Canadian import duties and sales tax. Generously, Haig-Brown sent her this copy of Timber. In my years of handling Haig-Brown books, this is the first example encountered where Haig-Brown modified one of his personal books in such a manner. The book is bound in the publisher’s brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Illustrated end papers. Pictorial dust jacket. The book is fine in a near very good dust jacket with some soiling on the back panel. A unique book. Signed by Author.
