Opera program; 9 1/4 x 6; pp. [4]; off-white stock, illustrated with an engraving; faint creases and a few minor nicks to edges; a small, penciled in, manuscript note to pp. 2; in very good condition. The American Academy of Music, a grand concert hall in Philadelphia, was built between 1855 and 1857 and is the oldest opera house in the US still used for its original purpose. The Adams-Pappenheim Opera Company, advertised here, was named after Austrian-American operatic soprano Eugenie Pappenheim and tenor Charles Adams. Very good .

(second half of the 19th century[?]); single sheet, pp. [2]; score and lyrics in blue and brown ink; 10 1/4 x 9; loss of paper to upper left corner, not affecting text, but for one letter of the title; crease line through middle and several closed cuts to edges; vertical split, crudely, but lovingly sewn together with period thread; occasional spotting; overall in good condition. A lovely rendition of Henry Herz' (1803 - 1888) "We Have Lived and Loved Together," it was arranged for the guitar by V. B. Bell for one Mrs. Caroline Schoch - possibly a teacher of German at the Indiana State Normal School. Very good .

A beautiful school report on Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, it was compiled by a remarkable young lady, who would go on to become a teacher and would be remembered for being chosen for her original thinking and dedication to her students, among 25 000 contestants, to represent the US on a trip to Africa. Victor August Herbert (1859 - 1924) was an Irish-American composer, celist, and orchestra conductor - best known for his numerous, highly successful operettas, including the current one, which would be his first major hit. Marie Burroughs (1866 - 1926) was a famous Broadway actress, described by author Willa Cather as: "not a very great actress, but she is great enough to be allowed to do her best unhindered. Good .

First edition; 6 x 4 3/4; pp. [16]; self-wraps, as published, tied with a decorative string; very light, uniform age-toning; a small nick to fore-edge of first leaf; period, manuscript note to top margin, identifying the publication; in very good or better condition. An uncommon, regional booklet, featuring the lyrics of 16 patriotic songs and including "Marching Through Georgia," "The Battle-cry of Freedom," "From Mission Ridge," and others, it was published in conjunction with the 24th Annual State Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, which took place in Sioux City, Iowa, in June of 1898. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization, founded in 1866 in Illinois by Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson, which encompassed veterans of the Union Army-, Navy-, and Marines, who had served during the Civil War.At the height of its enrollment in the early 1890s, it had more than 400 000 members, including women. The organization would be formally dissolved in 1956, after the death of its last member. Very good .

Originally compiled and published in Poznan in 1848 (then second and third series in 1854 and 1860) by composer and educator Teofil Klonowski (1805 - 1876), the current edition, containing both scores and lyrics, was aimed at the children of the first wave of Polish immigrants in Chicago. Taking place between 1850 and 1920 and being the largest of three, the immigration was primarily driven by economic changes in Poland, thus it was often referred to as "Za Chlebem" (For Bread). Boston, G. P. Reed & Co. 1852. First Edition. Sheet music; 13 1/2 x 10 1/2; pp. 3-5; cream stock, illustrated with an engraving by Geo. Smith after Hammatt Billings; closed cut to tail of spine; a bit of dust-dulling to margins; faint music shop label and number to front wrap; overall in good to very good condition. Created for the piano, the work was illustrated with a magnificent rendering of the Revere House by renowned Boston architect and artist Charles Howland Hammatt Billings (1818-1874). Among his achievements were the National Monument of the Forefathers and the original illustrations to Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Revere House, built in 1847, was considered by many Boston's most prestigious hotel, with its notable guests including Charles Dickens, Grand Duke Aleksei of Russia, Ulysses Grant, Walt Whitman, and so on. A project of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, the hotel would be named after Paul Revere - one of the co-founders of the organization. Very good .

Theodore Thomas and His Unraveled Orchestra Summer Garden Concerts in the Exposition Building Program
Chicago, Wm. Johnston Printing Co. 1890. Large program; 10 1/2 x 7 1/4; pp. [4]; salmon-colored stock; illustrated with drawings, woodcuts, and a photograph; a few nicks to edges and a closed cut to top margin; a small, manuscript notation to pp. 2; overall in very good condition. Theodore Thomas (1835 - 1905) was a German-American violinist and conductor, founder and first director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the first American orchestral conductor. A musical prodigy, he began his career in several pit orchestras in New York at just 10 years of age. He eventually moved to Chicago and from 1877 until 1891 - Theodore led Summer Garden Concerts in the Inter-State Industrial Exposition Building in Lake Park, where people paid twenty-five to fifty cents to enjoy his concerts and the beautiful location. Very good .
