Cohen, Alfred A.
In the District Court of the Fourth Judicial District of the State of California, in and for the City and County of San Francisco. George W. Tyler, Plaintiff, Vs. Annie A. Pratt, Defendant. Argument of Mr. Alfred A. Cohen, Councel for Plaintiff
San Francisco, Francis & Valentine, 1877. First Edition. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 1/2; pp. 1-61; beige wraps, printed and ruled in black; a few small chips to edges and tips of spine; inconspicious repair to front wrap along spine; text clean; in good to very good condition. A record of a sordid, 19th-century, San Francisco scandal, the publication presented the memorable argument of prominent attorney and President of the San Francisco & Oakland Railroad Alfred Andrew Cohen (1829 - 1887), in defence of his client George W. Tyler. Tyler, another attorney, had represented Annie A. Pratt during her divorce from Orville C. Pratt, a well-known judge, for the latter had been caught gallivanting with another woman. Annie had been awarded over $700,000 of hush money, but had ultimately refused to pay Tyler his fees, for which, consequently, he was suing her. Using colorful language and delivering an impressive performance, Cohen would call Judge Pratt a "Satyr, capering and whinnying among the fawns" and would, eventually, win for Tyler $10,000 for his services during the divorce proceedings. Good .

Fitch, Col. Henry S.
The Money Question. Speech of Col. Henry S. Fitch at Platt's Hall, San Francisco. First Grand Rally of the National Party of California, April 5th, 1878
San Francisco, Clough and Farjeon, Book and Job Printers, 1878. First Edition. First edition; 8 1/2 x 5 3/4; pp. [1], 2-24; beige wraps, printed in black and ruled with an elaborate border; a few small nicks to edges and a tiny chip to lower right corner; several spots, not affecting readability; uniform age-toning; in about very good condition. An uncommon publication, it was subtitled: y "The financial policy of the old parties, founded upon the British gold base system, compared with the financial policy of the (new) National Party, founded upon the logic of a national philosophy; -presenting the boldest and most remarkable juxtaposition of financial thought that has ever found expression in the United States; -furnishing texts for the widest field of discussion." Colonel Henry S. Fitch (1821 - 1907) was a veteran of the Mexican-American War, who came to San Francisco from upstate New York right after the end of the Gold Rush and soon established the first real estate office in Alameda County. An astute businessman, he would eventually own almost all the land in the Nob Hill district. He was also successful in his mining investments. His current speech was delivered at the first grand rally of the National Greenback Party of California in April of 1878. The party was active between 1874 and 1889 and ran candidates in the presidential elections of 1876, 1880, and 1884. With an anti-monopoly ideology, its name alluded to the non-gold backed paper money, aka greenbacks, issued by the North during and after the Civil War. Very good .

Geo. Bull & Co.
The Santa Cruz Side Hill Plow with Concave Mouldboard
San Francisco, Geo. Bull & Co. 1883. First Edition. Small broadside; 10 x 6 1/4; glossy, pink stock, printed in black and illustrated with a wood engraving; light fading a few minor nicks to edges; upper two corners clipped; a small puncture to upper margin; faint creases; overall in about very good condition. An utterly-charming advertisement piece for an agricultural tool pattented in 1883, the former touted: "Great improvement in side hill plows. The only plow made that is a complete success on the side hills and which will work equally as well on level land." The broadisde presented and described five points for the consideration of side hill farmers, including effectiveness and superior work, strength and durability, light draft, price, and ease of management - "..it can be managed by any boy who can drive a span of horses." The plow would be of significant help to California farmers, as the only available one in the 1870s and 1880s would be an East Coast invention - the Killgore Plow - which was not versatile and, according to local history, "the Easterners who manufactured the cursed thing knew nothing about the mountainous coastal terrain." . Very good .
