Geo. Bull & Co. - The Santa Cruz Side Hill Plow with Concave Mouldboard

San Francisco, Geo. Bull & Co. 1883. First Edition. Small broadside; 10 x 6 1/4; glossy, pink stock, printed in black and illustrated with a wood engraving; light fading a few minor nicks to edges; upper two corners clipped; a small puncture to upper margin; faint creases; overall in about very good condition. An utterly-charming advertisement piece for an agricultural tool pattented in 1883, the former touted: "Great improvement in side hill plows. The only plow made that is a complete success on the side hills and which will work equally as well on level land." The broadisde presented and described five points for the consideration of side hill farmers, including effectiveness and superior work, strength and durability, light draft, price, and ease of management - "..it can be managed by any boy who can drive a span of horses." The plow would be of significant help to California farmers, as the only available one in the 1870s and 1880s would be an East Coast invention - the Killgore Plow - which was not versatile and, according to local history, "the Easterners who manufactured the cursed thing knew nothing about the mountainous coastal terrain." . Very good .
