Adelson, Albert
A Letter to President Roosevelt, Related to His 1934 Devils Lake Speech
Oakland, CA, By the author, 1934. Typed letter, signed in ink; 12 x 8 1/2; single sheet, text to recto only; mild, uniform age-toning; old, horizontal fold lines; in very good condition. Albert Adelson (1850 - 1943) was a Russian-American resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, allegedly claiming to be one of the founders of the Russian Republic and author of their constitution. Known for his crusades against social injustices and for his relentless letter-writing to US presidents, senators, and other political figures, in this particular letter he addressed "His Excellency, President of the United States," in connection with President Franklin Roosevelt's 1934 visit to Devils Lake in North Dakota. The president's campaign against the drought and the desperate economic situation in the midst of the Great Depression prompted Adelson to offer a "genious invention, titled: Overhead-Irrigation and Fire-Extinguisher Wizard." According to him, it could cover the whole country and "120 million souls in the United States of America, will surely be saved ALIVE!!!" Begging for the Government's backing, Albert ended his letter with: "I remain, the best U. S. officially qualified citizen." . Very good .

Manuscript Document, Related to Highways in the City of Baldwin, Maine
Baldwin, ME, By the author, 1822. Manuscript; 7 1/2 x 6; laid paper, folded and sewn with a string to form a notebook; pp. [8]; text and tables to pp. 1-4, in brown ink; fore-edge unevenly trimmed; light spotting, mostly to margins; in very good condition. An early 19th century document, it addressed Joel Libby, one of the surveyors of highways in the town of Baldwin for the year 1822 and presented him with a list of assessments of estates, in the form of large, detailed tables, of the people in the town, and their respective proportions of seventy two dollars and twenty seven cents "to be expended in labor and materials upon the highways" within their limits. It listed allotments of ten cents per hour for men's labor and ox labor and ten cents per hour for a good plough and six cents per hour for a good cart. The manuscript also stated that any deficiencies from people not paying would be put in the next assessment for a town tax. The town of Baldwin, now part of the Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area, was originally known as Flinstown and was founded by a grant to the survivors of the Company of Captain Flint of Concord, Mass in 1774. It was incorporated in 1802 and named after one of its earliest settlers, Loammi Baldwin. At the time, the town was said to be "destitute of a meeting house and minister" and that the first roads constructed through it were in a "dangerous condition for teams, carriages, and horses." Apparently, in the following years, efforts had been made to improve the condition of the roadways. Very good .

Salem, Salem Gazette Office, 1835. Broadside; 12 x 9 3/4; off-white stock, printed in black, ruled with an elaborate, geometric border; edges trimmed unevenly; old crease lines; a few small, incospicious pieces of tape to verso; a bit of age-toning and a few tiny punctures to lower half; minor foxing to margins; in good or better condition. The broadside listed the exercises to be held, in order, including "Thanksgiving Hymn," an "Address by Daniel P. King, Esq." Tramp Art, "Return from the Honeymoon Tour
S. l. (Chicago [?]), s. n. 1881. Albumen print on a card mount, behind glass in a tramp art frame, n. d. (print ca 1881, frame ca 1900); image approx. 4 1/4 x 6, frame 6 3/4 x 8; print with a crease to upper left corner, light age-toning, and a few small spots (not examined outside of the frame); frame recto gilded, with minor flaking of paint and light dust-dulling; overall in very good condition. Originally created for Harper's Weekly by Sol Eytinge in 1878, the scene was one in a racist series of African-American caricatures, which revolved around the courtship and marriage of two women - "The Twins." Shown strolling down the street, hand in hand with their new husbands, the features and gestures of the four were greatly exaggerated, mocking their attempts at copying white society's refined manners. Around them were children, friends, and family - staring and pointing - and an older woman, leaning on a tree, almost doubled over in laughter at the spectacle. Very good .

Baillie, J.
Family Register
New York, Baillie, James, 1846. First Edition. Broadside, 9 3/4 x 13 1/2; hand-colored lithograph with four scenes across the top, with figures separated by Gothic arches and yellow foliate decoration down the sides, partially filled in manuscript; a few small spots, mostly to margins; several faint erasure marks; overall in very good condition. Historical evidence suggests that people in early America often did not know their exact date of birth. As they often needed age qualifications to pay taxes, marry, serve in the military, etc. one of the most common ways of recording birth dates was to write them in the family Bible. In the early 19th century, famous lithographers and engravers, including Peter Maverick, Nathaniel Currier, and James Baillie, would take it up a notch publishing ornate family registers, with spaces for names, place and date of birth, marriage, and death. The current one, recording the family history of Nathaniel Burnham and Hannah Marshall, included hand-colored images of parents and two children, a mother with a small child and a baby in a cradle, a bride and groom and a minister, and woman and child in mourning attire in front of a monument. Very good .

Barnard, Hon. Daniel D.
An Address Delivered September 6, 1831, Before the Adelphic Union Society of Williams College; the Evening Preceding the Annual Commencement
Williamstown, Printed by Ridley Bannister, 1831. First Edition. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 1/4; pp. [1], 4-36; brown wraps, printed and ruled in black; a few spots of foxing to margins of wraps and title page; loss of paper to corners of back wrap; in good condition. The Adelphic Union literary society was founded at Williams College between 1793 and 1795. It would be the first extra-curricular organization at the college. Initially including all of the students, it outgrew its quarters and split into the Philologian and the Philotechnian Societies in the winter of 1795 - 1796, though both their goals were largely the same - the literary improvement and the intelectual culture of their members. Daniel Dewey Barnard (1797 - 1861) was a lawyer, politican, diplomat, US Representative from New York, and graduate of Williams College in 1818. Very good .
