Pozner, Vladimir
Les Etats Desunis. Reportage (the Disunited States. A Reportage) [an Association Copy]
Paris, Les editions Denoel, 1938. Review Copy. Review copy; 7 3/4 x 5 1/2; pp. [5], 8-308, [2]; beige wraps, illustrated in black and red; partially unopened; hinges a bit weak (text block still securely attached); deckled fore-edge a bit brittle; small nicks to tips of spine; light, uniform age-toning; very good condition. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page by Vladimir Pozner to Hungarian-British author and journalist Arthur Koestler (1905 - 1983). Vladimir Solomonovich Pozner (1905 - 1992) was a Russian-Jewish-French writer and translator. Born in Paris, Pozner spent his childhood in Russia and studied in Leningrad, where he frequently gathered with Aleksandr Blok, Anna Akhmatova, Mayakovsky, etc. to read and discuss poetry. He returned to Paris in 1921, where he began writing for several left wing journals and published his first book of poetry - "Poemes de circonstances" - based on his experiences as a Russian Jew in exile. A staunch Communist sympathizer, mostly due to having met and being influenced by Maxim Gorky, Pozner threw himself into helping refugees fleeing the Nazis in the 1930s. During that time, he also manned an obscure, Communist press agency, together with Arthur Koestler and Soviet Intelligence Agent Alexander Rado (1899 - 1981). Pozner went to the US several times, conducting research for his current, in essence, leftist travelogue, documenting racism, inequality, everyday life and its characters, the gangsters, the starlets, and the poor workers. It would become an instant success and later, would be the base of the Oscar-nominated, Film noir "The Dark Mirror" (1946). Despite its success, the book was not translated into English until 2014. Although good friends, co-workers, and supporters, Arthur Koestler and Pozner would eventually have a falling-out, after the former's disenchantment with the Communist ideology. Koestler would put down in his autobiographical "The Invisible Writing," about Pozner: "He has since written..some violent attacks against me." . Very good .

Rice, Roswell Esq.
Orations and Poetry on Moral and Religious Subjects
Albany, Printed by C. Van Benthuysen, 1850. Early edition, n. d. (ca 1850), possibly a second, expanded edition, as the AAS has a copy, with its "Introduction" dated 1849 and a smaller number of pages; 7 1/2 x 4 3/4; pp. [7], 4-400, [2]; full red morocco over boards, lavishly embossed, with gilt title and decorations to spine; illustrated with portrait frontis and small, woodcut vignettes; a bit of rubbing to edges and corners and some wear to boards; contemorary gift inscription to second free leaf; a few small spots of foxing, mostly to first and last few leaves; overall in about very good condition. Research has not revealed much about Roswell Rice (1803 - ?), but for the fact that he was a New York Assemblyman (listed in Issue No.4, 1858 of "Documents of the Assembly of the State of New York"), that he had been chronically ill for most of his life, and that he was deeply religious. Judging by his chapter on slavery, he was also an ardent abolitionist, writing: "Why raise the cry of freedom, when the African remains in bondage? Ye sons of America, blush for the treason you have committed on the flag of your liberty and the Declaration of your Independance." Other subjects covered included war, temperance, and a large section of his original poetry. (Sabin 70859). Very good .

Savelin, Z. (Zinovii)
Fata-Morgana ILI Burzhuaznaia Lozh O "Narodnom Kapitalizme
Moskva, Goslizdat, 1956. First Edition. First edition; 7 3/4 x 5; pp. 3-62, [2]; stapled pictorial wraps; illustrated with political cartoons by Lev Samuilov, Boris Efimov, and Herluf Bidstrup; light wear to corners and tips of spine; in very good to near fine condition. A scarce publication, rumoured to have been confiscated in the entirety of its run, it was published in the midst of the Cold War as an anti-People's Capitalism propaganda. A political meme, popularized in the 1950s, it touted the success of the American economical system throughout the world. The author of the current book, allegedly basing it on official statistics and facts, attempted to disprove the existence of people's capitalism beyond a theoretical idea, calling it a mirage, or Fata-Morgana. Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty
To the President, Senate and House of Representatives of the United States... Terminate the Treaty of Extradition...
New York, By the authors, 1893. Broadside, n. d. (1893); 14 x 8 1/2; text and a table to recto, printed in black; several fold lines, else minor wear; in very good condition. In February of 1893, the US Senate would ratify a controversial agreement, the first ever extradition treaty between the two countries, which initially was proposed by Emperor of Russia Alexander III in 1886 and which would be quite-unfavorably received by many Americans, who feared it would affect political exiles, who had sought refuge in the United States. The treaty indeed included a political offense clause, but it also stipulated an exception for individuals that took “an attempt against the life of the head of either Government ." Nowadays, the validity of the agreement has created two camps - on the one hand, those arguing that the treaty specified "it shall remain in force for six months after notice of its termination shall have been given by either of the contracting parties" and since such notice has never been formally recorded - it is still valid; on the other hand, others speculating that with the multiple changes in government, the treaty became invalid after the October Revolution in 1917. The broadside, published by the Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty, featured a very-large table with columns for names and addresses (unused) and stated: "To the President, Senate and House of Representatives of the United States: We, the undersigned, citizens of the United States, respectfully petition you to give notice to His Majesty, the Emperor of all the Russias, that the United States of America desire to terminate the Treaty of Extradition recently made with him..[When signed please return to Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty, 100 Broadway, New York City.]" Not in OCLC, not in the trade (as of January 2022). Very good .

Sulzer, Hon. William
The Russian Passport Question. Speech of Hon. William Sulzer, of New York, in the House of Representatives, December 13, 1911. Treaty between Russia and the United States
S. l. (Washington, DC), s. n. 1911. First Edition. First edition; 9 1/2 x 6; pp. [1], 2-8; small rust spots from staples; two small punctures to upper margin from a removed pin; horizontal fold lines; very good condition. In the early 19th century, the United States and Russia had signed the US-Russian Commercial Treaty of 1832, which also allowed unrestricted travel and protection to the people of both countries. By the early 20th century, Russia repeatedly and steadfastly refused to accept passports, issued to Russian-born Jews, who had become naturalized American citizens, thus violating the provisions of the treaty. On December 13, the day of the current speech, the House of Representatives voted to abrogate it and on December 21, the Senate approved the House's decission and adopted the joint resolution. William Sulzer (1863 - 1941) was a lawyer, congressman and the 39th Governor of New York. He would be remembered as the only New York Governor to ever be impeached (for allegedly lying under oath and using campaign contributions for personal gains). Very good .

Swett, J. Jr.; Jackman, A.; et al
Citizen Soldier. Devoted to the Interests of the Militia, to Military Science and National Defense in General, Volume I, Number 14
Norwitch, VT, Swett and Jackman, 1840. Single issue of October 30, 1840; 13 1/2 x 11; pp. [8]; partially unopened; period manuscript note to first page; a bit of spotting, mostly to margins; in very good condition. A rare copy of a weekly newspaper, devoted to the interests of the State Militia, it would ultimately last for just a year and a total of 52 issues - beginning in July of 1840 and ending in July of 1841. For its last few months, it would be published in Windsor. The periodical was a joint venture between Major Josiah Swett (1814 - ?) and Brigadier General Alonzo Jackman (1809 - 1879). Swett was a clergyman, editor, and professor at Norwitch University. Jackman was an engineer, military officer, and also a professor at Norwitch, and would later become famous for developing and implementing a system for training troops for the Union Army during the Civil War. Though ambitious, the newspaper would be one of very few failures for the two distinguished men. The current issue included articles on national defenses, efficiency of the militia, Alexander Hamilton, etc. but also an amusing section of miscellany, featuring write-ups on New England Cider, Social Intercourse, and mothers.
