Beston, Henry
As Apropos Today As It Was in 1946. Personal Greeting by Henry Beston
Hingham, Massachusetts, Henry Beston, 1946. Original autographed New Year's greeting and stamped envelope. Written, signed and addressed by Henry Beston to his long-time friend and photographer, Clayton Smith of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. On spending the holidays with his in-laws, away from Chimney Farm, he writes "Nobody could be more kind but oh! how I long for my own woodpile and my own hearth fire!". The naturalist's frustration with the state of the world and his love of the natural order foreshadows today's climate change concerns: "ALL OF US WHO LOVE AND HONOR THE EARTH MUST CLOSE RANKS NOW AND FIGHT TO THE LAST WALL. THE DESTRUCTIONISTS SHALL NOT HAVE OUR LOVELY AND MYSTERIOUS EARTH!" Attention admirers and collectors of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth: Many more unique items from TBCL's private Beston Collection are now available. Please contact us to find out more. HENRY BESTON was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, The Outermost House, written after Beston spent what he called "a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Beston married writer Elizabeth Coatsworth in 1929. .

Beston, Henry
Carved by the Last of the Ship's Figurehead Carvers" - "Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the Farmer of Chimney Farm.
Hingham, Massachusetts, Henry Beston, 1944. Original autographed postcard, two (2) page letter and stamped envelope. Written, signed and addressed by Henry Beston to his long-time friend and photographer, Clayton Smith of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The postcard features a photograph of the porch at Chimney Farm, along with the personal message. Beston's letter waxes poetic about the farm, "I am happiest with my own northerners, the deep snowfalls, the beauty of the burning nights, and the blessed silence of the farming land, that vast silence which is a pool of so many lesser silences." which he misses while spending the holiday in Massachusetts. But he is a victim of the times .. "Our good faithful farm lad, too, is in the midst of this terrible business on the western front, and the farm chores can take about every minute of one's time. So I am suburbanite, and a d-d bad one!" Attention admirers and collectors of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth: Many more unique items from TBCL's private Beston Collection are now available. A Rare Find - from Tbcl's Private Beston Collection. Early 1929 Drawing and Personal Greeting by Henry Beston!
Hingham, Massachusetts, Beston, Henry, 1929. Signed by Author. Original illustration, New Year's greeting and autograph, dated the year following the 1928 publication of his landmark book, THE OUTERMOST HOUSE. Beston sketched his beloved Fo'castle on the Cape Cod shoreline, and wrote .."SHIP AHOY! A RISING TIDE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO BOB AND FLORENCE AND BOBBY JR. FROM THEIR OLD FRIEND OF THE OUTERMOST PALAZZO. - HENRY. NEW YEARS 1929." Henry Beston donated Fo'castle to the Audubon Society in 1959. In 1964, Beston returned one last time to dedicate Fo'castle as a National Literary Landmark. The dedication plaque reads: "WHEREIN HE SOUGHT THE GREAT TRUTH AND FOUND IT IN THE NATURE OF MAN." He urged young visitors to the site to keep a reverence for nature in their hearts. The house was washed away by a hurricane in February 1978, but pilgrims still come each year to see the place where it stood.  Attention admirers and collectors of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth: Many more unique items from TBCL's private Beston Collection are now available. Borland, Hal
Twelve Moons of the Year with 2 Signed Note Cards, Envelope and Letter by Hal Borland
New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1979. First edition 1979 Alfred A.Knopf. A near-fine copy by Hal Borland of TWELVE MOONS OF THE YEAR in a near-fine jacket unclipped with the woodcuts by James Grashaw in the original black cloth and beige boards with gold stamping on the spine. Dust jacket has some wear and slight tear on top left front and protected in mylar protector. Included are 2 note cards inside an envelope and one letter from his Connecticut farm in1973, signed and addressed by Hal Borland to his friend Ruth Tinker discussing gardening, the environment and cooking. A few excerpts: "Thanks for your thoughtful letter about the environmental problems and the stuff we eat. The farther we get from the land, the worse off we are. But try to tell those who are in charge! "Get away from the land! You are underprivileged there!" And such rot.But as you say, even the birds turn beggar after being hand-fed long enough. Maybe we don't deserve more than what we've got." "Dear Ruth Tinker! Thanks for your good letter. have the Scully book, and several others on weeds, wild plants and edibles, but not the Fernald-Kinsey, though those names ring very familiar I must have something by them, individually. Anyway. We had some top-bunching onions, given to us by my mother in Colorado, but they died out. Winter killed, we thought. And we had a small stand of Jerusalem artichokes, which also died out -- I didn't know they could die out, or even be killed out. Anyway, we would be grateful for a few of each, if you can spare them, and whenever. Incidentally, we have used Jerusalem artichokes in place of water chestnuts in Chinese food. Work splendidly. One other thing -- don't try to peel Jerusalem artichokes. Boil them first, and the skins slip off easily." A beautiful small archive from the New York Times writer/naturalist. .
